Shelby County Arts Organization COVID Impact Survey Results September 2020

The arts sector was one of the first to close in March and will be one of the last to fully reopen. While the impacts are devastating, arts organizations and artists continue to be resilient, creative, and collaborative during these challenging times. The financial overview, employee data and programming updates listed were collected through an ArtsMemphis survey in August and September 2020. 47 Shelby County arts nonprofits responded.

Layoffs & Furloughs

36% of respondents have had layoffs (85 positions)
32% of respondents have had furloughs (182 positions)

These organizations employed approximately 1350 individuals at the beginning of 2020. Approximately 20% of employees have been impacted.
Note that the hundreds of individuals contracted by arts organizations are not counted in these numbers but in most cases faced immediate income loss due to event cancellations.
