At ArtsMemphis, we understand that unrestricted operating support is the most valuable type of funding that an arts organization can receive, and the most difficult type of funding to raise. That's why our Operating Support Grants have been a cornerstone of our mission for more than half a century. And that tradition continues today, thanks to the generosity of more than 1,300 generous individuals, foundations, and businesses.
We're excited to announce that our latest round of Operating Support grants includes nearly $1.2 million in critical operating funds to local arts organizations. These funds will help local groups do everything from paying their utility bills to attracting talented performers from Memphis and around the globe. Best of all, with this year's grants, we opened up our funding guidelines to a wider range of applicants than ever before. In fact, the number of organizations that were eligible to apply for our General Operating grants increased from 23 last year to 39 this year. Many of our newly eligible grantees have an explicit mission to serve underrepresented populations.
ArtsMemphis President & CEO noted that "by opening up our grantmaking guidelines, we're powering arts experiences for 674,000 additional audience members, and we're providing funds to 2,740 additional artists." It's all part of our work to align our grantmaking with our core values: access, collaboration, equity and inclusion, creativity and innovation, and transparency.
