Earlier this month, Opera Memphis -- a longtime ArtsMemphis grantee -- was in Madrid, Spain as one of only FIVE(!!!) North American opera companies invited to attend the World Opera Forum. They were represented by current General Director, Ned Canty. All participants were hand-picked to represent one of the four main areas of discussion - Cultural Heritage, Diversity, New Works, and Advocacy. Opera Memphis was chosen to speak about Advocacy, making a case for the importance of opera in our communities. In a statement, Canty said, "We envision a future where the company is vitally interwoven with the fabric of the community, making the city and region a better place."
The World Opera Forum is the first time in history that representatives from opera companies across the globe, along with composers, directors, and other individual practitioners, are being convened in one place to discuss the future of the field...We envision a future where the company is vitally interwoven with the fabric of the community, making the city and region a better place.
- Ned Canty, General Director, Opera Memphis
