We were thrilled to learn that The New York Times recently published an Interactive Feature about Memphis' own Charles "Lil Buck" Riley and jookin' -- the dance style that he helped to popularize around the world. The Times feature dissects the mind-bending choreography behind Lil Buck's well-known "The Swan," set to "The Dying Swan," one of the dance world's most celebrated solos. Buck worked on the piece with his ballet teacher, Katie Smythe, the founder of New Ballet Ensemble & School (NBE). The instructors at NBE are dedicated to training students in a variety of different cultural forms of dance, regardless of their ability to pay.
Watch Lil Buck's "The Swan," below, and prepare to have your head spin.
And be sure to check out the full Interactive Feature on The New York Times website.
