Memphis, TN – (October 4, 2018)
ArtsMemphis recently awarded Arts Build Communities (ABC) grants to thirty-one non-profit organizations for artistic projects that benefit the Memphis community.
Arts Build Com
munities is a program funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC) and administered by ArtsMemphis. ABC grants offer financial support for projects in arts disciplines including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, design arts, crafts, photography, literature, interdisciplinary arts and folk arts. The funded projects broaden access to arts experiences, address quality of life issues through the arts, and enhance the sustainability of cultural experiences.
The ABC grant program displays the power of art in helping various types of organizations achieve their mission and really speaks to the inte
rsectional work happening throughout our area. ABC grant recipients are using incredibly creative ways to incorporate art into their efforts of improving our community.
For example, Memphis’ historic Elmwood Cemetery is using art bring historical characters to life through performance, storytelling and music during the Soul of the City tour on October 26th and 27th.In spring of 2019, the Neighborhood Christian Centers will take students to experience the art, culture and history of Argentina. This project recreates an entire travel experience in a small warehouse in Frayser. Over one thousand students will have a full spring-break experience, without boarding an actual plane.
While the Overton Park Conservancy focuses primarily on managing 184 acres of public parkland in midtown Memphis, their October 6th a “Day of Merrymaking” will feature neighborhood artists. With performances from groups such as Company D and Danza Azteca Quetzalcoatl de Memphis, this project highlights the diversity of artistic talent in Memphis.
