Having grown up in this area and spent time in Memphis as a kid, it can be easy to take for granted how impressive the Mississippi River is. I was reminded of this when one of my best friends from Texas came to visit and told me that crossing the Mississippi River as he was driving in was one of the coolest experiences he has had. The breadth of the river, the seemingly slow but constant movement of it, the knowledge that you aren’t likely to swim across it easily and watching it rise and fall… it really is incredible to behold. Like Memphis’ heat index, The Summer of Cloar is heating up, offering a host of exhibits and events for everyone, from those unfamiliar with Carroll Cloar’s work to his biggest fans. University of Memphis, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, David Lusk Gallery and Christian Brothers University came together to produce the collective examination of the Memphis artist’s work to celebrate his centennial.
