BRIDGES

The BRIDGES Center is a work of architecture, a signature building that is dynamic and educates. The one-of-kind building, designed by Coleman Coker and thebuildingstudio architects, is environmentally friendly and aesthetically appealing. It contains an indoor challenge course, rock climbing wall, group meeting and gathering spaces, computer laboratories, and a full training kitchen. The building is sustainable by using wood from certified forests that are re-planted and managed, recycled carpeting, and environmentally friendly material where possible. Also, Rain water is cleansed, reclaimed, and recycled before being put back into the earth. There are two interior gardens – one with native Tennessee forest plants and one with non-native plants that are typically thought of as native. The entire building has natural light spilling into work places and all work areas have an outside view. Sunlight and fresh air enhance the experience of employees and guests within. The building’s water is heated by a solar collector that is the first of its kind. MLG&W uses the building as a showcase for its “Green” energy program and TVA maintains a solar working display at the building. There are kiosks located throughout the building so school children can learn about solar power. The building is constructed to in a way that reveals how it is constructed with transparent walls that expose the tectonics of the building. The 55,000 square foot building is the “Kid Friendliest Building in Memphis.”
