      Gallery Talk and Public Lecture by Dr. Daniel Mato Metal Museum Gallery Talk and Public Lecture by Dr. Daniel Mato Presented by Metal Museum at Metal Museum February 9, 2012 Gallery Talk and Public Lecture by Dr. Daniel Mato, curator of the current exhibition: Weighed in the Balance: Akan Gold Weights, from the Canadian Museum of Making, sponsored by Mallory Alexander & The Honorary Consul to Canada in Memphis, B. Lee Mallory. This event is hosted by the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals. Refreshments will be provided. Mixer 6:00-6:30pm, lecture 6:30-7:15pm in the library, gallery walkthrough 7:15-8:00pm in the museum.

      02/11/12- 02/12/12	Basic Blacksmithing ll Metal Museum Basic Blacksmithing ll Presented by Metal Museum at Metal Museum February 11-February 12, 2012 This class will focus on a “grill” using various types of scrolls such as ribbon, fish tail and snub-end. The grill will be assembled and fitted using the traditional techniques of punching, forge welding, riveting and collaring. Tuition covers tools and materials. Students must provide their own safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves. Limit 10 per session

The workshop will consist of lecture, demonstration and hands-on-activities. Each student will make at least two molds and pour one casting in aluminum. Students will forge a hammer and an eye punch. You will learn skills in power hammer operation, bottom tooling, riveting, team striking, hammer control and basic metallurgy. The instructor will start the class with the basic skills of how to make a punch and a drift. Then students will take this knowledge to create a unique bottle opener using additional techniques like forging, twisting and filing.
