    Power House

Built in 1914, Memphis' Central Station was too big and important to rely on power from outside sources. The Illinois Central installed its own coal fired plant. Over the remaining decades of the Rail Age, the power house pushed steam and electricity into the station, which in turn pushed people, commerce and ideas to and from Memphis. In 1999, Central Station reopened, becoming an anchor for the South Main Arts District. And in 2003 Delta Axis began transforming new forms of energy out of the Power House: the power of images.
