Voices of the South, a non-profit theatre organization in Memphis, is preparing to host the Seventh Annual Memphis Children’s Theatre Festival. The festival will take place at the McCoy Theatre on the Rhodes College campus May 25-26 2012.

Our mission of the festival is to create a safe, educational, affordable, and exciting atmosphere in which children and families can attend innovative theatre, and participate in FREE, arts oriented activities that foster the imagination. The children’s festival acquaints the community with the work of Memphis artists, promotes arts awareness, and helps build a stronger, more invigorated community.

The Seventh Annual Memphis Children’s Theatre Festival will feature original children’s theatre performances from some of Tennessee’s finest companies including Voices of the South, Theatre Memphis, and Chatterbox Audio Theatre. Also participating are public and private schools. The performances involve marionettes, puppetry, dance, mime, mask work, physical theatre, and classic storytelling. The event also features workshops, interactive arts experiences in the outdoor festival grounds, and live performances by area youth.

In preparation for this festival, Voices of the South is looking for enthusiastic people to volunteer their time and talents. Due to the fact that the festival hosts anywhere from 1,200-1,500 participants each year, we are in dyer need of eager, kid-friendly folks. We will need said people to be at Rhodes College both Friday, May 25th from 6pm-9pm and on Saturday, May 26th from 9am-5pm. We understand that these are extensive hours so we are prepared to delegate specific shifts.

The Levitt Shell is located in the beautiful and expansive Overton Park in Midtown Memphis, Tennessee.

The park, an oasis of green in the middle of the city where art and culture come together has united Memphians for generations. The park itself is also home to miles of trails and a golf course, and is a natural setting for the creative spirit and young at heart since it is also home to the Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis College of Art, and the Memphis Zoo.

Recognized as the site of Elvis Presley's first professional rock-n-roll show, The Levitt Shell has been an outdoor performing arts pavilion since the 1930s and is now ready for a new curtain call.

In this workshop the children will learn the history of mural painting, new techniques, and team work skills as they work together to make a new addition to the Dixon’s permanent collection.
