ArtsAccelerator 2016 Grant Projects and Artists
ArtsAccelerator is an incentive grant for visual artists who are at a critical juncture in their career. Annually, ArtsAccelerator provides five grants of $5,000 each to visual artists from the greater Memphis communtiy to enhance the artist's overall work or career. The grant will suppot visual artists residing in Shelby County.
Paula Kovarik received her Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She ran a successful graphic design business for 25 years. She makes art with thread and cloth, exploring line and texture. Her work has been recognized in national and international shows and journals including American Craft Magazine, ArtPrize 2015, and several Quilt National exhibitions. Born in Memphis, TN in 1991, Lawrence Matthews III came from a family who encouraged him to be an artist from a young age. Being raised in a racially tense environment his experiences and interests manifested themselves in his visual art. Matthews graduated from Germantown High School in 2009. After experimenting with different styles and influences, Matthews came into his own creating art combining Post Modernist, Pop Art, and contemporary influences to tell the story of the African Descendant living in America. Madsen Minax makes films, videos, sound works and other interdisciplinary projects motivated by interests in embodiment, magick, erotic transcendence and various stinking human conditions, like mortality and love. Read more about Madsen here:click here
Michael Roy is a contemporary street artist working under the moniker Birdcap. Born during the Reagan administration in an indistinct small town in Mississippi, Roy now lives out of his suitcase, painting murals from city to city with installed works in places as far flung as Tokyo and New York. Laurel Sucsy received an MFA in painting from Tyler School of Art and a BA from Bowdoin College. Sucsy has also undergone studies at Temple University Rome and Brandeis University and completed residencies at The Ragdale Foundation, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and The Vermont Studio Center.
