Playback Memphis

Playback Memphis is part of a longstanding international organization that supports Playback Theater companies in over 60 countries around the world. For five years prior to our starting Playback Memphis, my husband, Joe, and I were part of Big Apple Playback Theatre, a successful company in New York City. In 2008, to our delight, we launched Playback Memphis.Mission:We believe that by empowering people to tell the stories of their lives, and by encouraging people to listen to these stories, we can help people see the dignity and worth in their personal experience, make meaningful connections with one another, and respect each other more fully.

      When Virginia Murphy took on the role of Artistic Director for Playback Memphis in 2007, she envisioned the company doing twelve shows a year, building and strengthening communities, and bringing different kinds of artists together to create something unique. Two years later she and the company are well on their way. Playback Memphis has performed for groups such as Memphis Leadership Academy, Memphis Theological Seminary, and The National Alliance of the Mentally Ill, and this weekend they will perform at Theater South for the general public while collaborating with writers and photographers. If you've never seen a Playback show, essentially they work like this: audience members tell stories and the company spontaneously reenacts them with a complete cast of characters, costumes, even music. This week photographers and writers are joining in to capture the performance with pictures and written accounts. The project will start as blog posts then possibly grow into a book. The theme of this weekend's shows will be life and work in Memphis. "Memphis is an intense place to live," says Murphy, "no matter what your faith, gender, or economic standing." She sees the Playback shows as a venue for people to download their intense stories, and to hear different voices in a context of empathy. The company strives to empower any person with a story, but particularly those who cannot or do not speak easily for themselves - the disenfranchised or less advantaged. Don't worry if you suffer from stage fright, a listening audience member is just as worthy as a story-telling one. However, a Playback audience member I'm friends with, who has a propensity toward shyness, once told me they didn't know they had a story or the nerve to share it, until they showed up and were surrounded by a room full of willing ears.
