Tennessee Shakespeare Company

Tennessee Shakespeare Company (TSC) is the Mid-South's professional, classical threatre company . TSC is a professional, 501(c)(3) theatre and education organization which performs the plays of William Shakespeare seasonally outdoors in rotating repertory; performs classical and Southern writers seasonally indoors; produces a Southern-centric New Play Festival, and provides year-round educational and training programming. TSC was named Best Newcomer in 2008 by The Commercial Appeal.

    05/23/12- 06/03/12	The Glass Menagerie Dixon Gallery and Gardens The Glass Menagerie Presented by Tennessee Shakespeare Company at Dixon Gallery and Gardens May 23-June 3, 2012 Originally written as a short story titled "Portrait of a Girl in Glass," this American Southern classic was later dramatized by Mississippi-born Tennessee Williams. Considered by many to the most autobiographical of his works, the play was conceived fuzzily and lovingly as from memory. Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC. on behalf of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn.

      My wife whisper-shouted these observations to me last Friday night during the Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. I smiled at the details that struck my own true love, but didn’t respond with the obvious. All actors sweat on stage, you see, and they all spray a little when they say the word “passion” with passion. But only when seen as intimately as we were able to witness this particular performance — and under the stars, mind you — do body fluids become part of the drama. Collapse

      We took a large group of high school seniors to see this play on the coldest day of the week. Even with a vicious wind chilling us at time seemingly to the bone, the students were mesmerized. I have seen many versions of this play, and this was one of the best. The actors are commanding, and, yet, humanize the characters. The only suggestion I would have is that for school performances, perhaps an intermission would be recommended. The amphitheater gives the audience a wonderfully authentic setting. I'm looking forward to "The Tempest" there in the spring. Memphis has much to be proud of in this company. the future. Collapse

      St. George’s Church in Germantown provides a unique and exciting space for the Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s enthusiastic staging of Othello. With actors running through the aisles, sitting in the pews, and encouraging responses from the crowd, this production has an Elizabethan feel to match the classic text. Though the audience is sometimes forced to turn around to see the action, the dialogue is heard clearly due to impressive amplification and mixing work. The acting is solid from top to bottom. While Johnny Lee Davenport’s powerful performance as Othello demands attention and praise, the cunning and sly lago played by Paul Bernardo is the highlight of the night. No matter what part of the city you live in, Othello is worth the trip. Collapse

      Having witnessed preview scenes with the female cast members at the Interim Restaurant Shakespeare Dinner and having heard the cello sonatas there, I can say that this production will be one of the most innovative in Mid - South history!!
