Memphis Cultural Arts Enrichment Center

Our mission: Developing Memphis area youth academically, socially, and emotionally through performing arts education and stage performance. Founded in 1987, for more than 20 years over 3000 children have had their lives positively impacted by the program. The results have been that all of its students have successfully finished high school and gone to college or some other post high school graduate study.

    12/11/09	The Sound of Joy Center for Southern Folklore The Sound of Joy Presented by Memphis Cultural Arts Enrichment Center at Center for Southern Folklore December 11, 2009 The Center for Southern Folklore Hall comes alive with the high energy music and dancing of the nationally recognized Watoto De’ Afrika with a special cameo appearance by their younger counterparts, The Funzzies. Their presentation of The Sound of Joy combines traditional and contemporary African, Caribbean, Cuban, and Hip Hop music with Jazz and Big Band sounds for the holiday season.       I decided on the day of the event at Christ the Rock Church to take my family. I can say it was a powerful and moving tribute to African-American Culture and gives hope to those of us who are post baby boomers, but have young children of our own to expose to these traditions to help ensure that they live on in future generations. It was a 5-star experience for me and my family. As African-Americans, I could not have been more proud of the efforts and achievements of everyone, especially the young people involved. Collapse
