      This was absolutely one of the BEST productions I have ever seen, The casting was the most brilliant,everyone was beyond being in their character. I laughed so hard I cried. I could watch this version over and over again. I can't express the enjoyment I experienced with this show!!! Standing Ovation to Bobby Child, Zela Zangler,Polly and the tap dancers and especially the shoot out sceen. Thanks so much for all the hard work you all have done!!!! my rate is 10 stars. :) Collapse

      Theatre Memphis's production of "A Delicate Balance" certainly has impeccable credentials. Edward Albee's script won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The cast is a veritable Who's Who of Memphis talent. And Bill Short's intricate, geometric set is a wonder to behold. So why is the end result so airless and unengaging? Most of the blame lies with Albee's standard over-educated, affluent, hard-drinking characters, who are abstracted beyond any comprehensible humanity. Albee loves to disrupt the lives of the idle rich; here the intruder is a nameless anxiety that overtakes two characters without warning (and departs just as mysteriously). Meanwhile, the members of the play's central family drink, brood, and bait one another mercilessly, all while riding emotional arcs that are practically inscrutable. Amid its flood of verbiage, the play has some interesting things to say about friendship and privilege, but Albee administers his themes like medicine. And perhaps the production also suffers from a problem of timing: Considering everything going on in today's world, the petty interpersonal disputes inside an upper-class suburban household can't help but feel somewhat irrelevant.       Theatre Memphis opened its 2010-11 season with an uplifting presentation of the classic Irving Berlin musical Annie Get Your Gun. Under the direction of Jason Spitzer, the true story of sharpshooter Annie Oakley’s rise to fame and her romance with rival Frank Butler unfolds. Thanks to the musical direction of Gary Beard, the brilliant songs from this show keep you smiling, lip syncing and saying to yourself, “Oh yes, I forgot that one came from Annie Get Your Gun.” Oakley (Kirie Walz) is an illiterate backwoods hunter who sells her game to support herself and her orphaned siblings until she is discovered by Col. Buffalo Bill Cody, who hires her to join his Wild West Show. She develops an immediate crush on Buffalo Bill’s feature act, Frank Butler (Kent Fleshman), and he develops a liking to her too, which infuriates his eccentric assistant, Dolly Tate (Ashley Bugg Brown) who had her eyes on Butler but is clearly just desperate to get hitched—to anyone. The budding romance hits a brick wall when Oakley usurps Butler’s spotlight. Walz and Fleshman exude wonderful chemistry. Fleshman commands the stage with his deep rich and soothing voice and Walz seems to be “doin what comes naturally” as she modulates her sweet, soft voice from country to classical to fit the song. Walz is a drama teacher at her high school alma mater, Germantown High School, which is renowned for its theatre program. Bugg Brown is marvelous as the zany Dolly Tate. She gives the show a boost of energy and amusement whenever she’s on stage. The other players I really enjoyed watching were Joseph Lackie, Wild West Show producer Charlie Davenport; Shawn Brian Reed, Chief Sitting Bull, the mild mannered, sensible benefactor of the Show’s European tour who becomes an adoptive father “Papa Bull” to Annie (you don’t want to miss the moment when he gives Annie her Indian name); and Houston Newsome, Little Jake, one of Annie’s five adorable siblings. The costumes are cute (except the horrid evening gown Annie wears to Pawnee Bill’s ball). The set design is uninteresting but you’ll start to overlook it because the music is so mesmerizing and catchy. Three days later I can’t get “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” out of my head! There are so many famous favorites in this show, including “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “The Girl That I Marry,” “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” They Say It’s Wonderful,” and “Anything You Can Do.” Annie Get Your Gun is definitely a “pull…hit” in my book. You’ll leave the theatre feeling warm and fuzzy and singing all the way home (and then some). Collapse

      "Nontraditional" performances of Shakespeare, set outside the universe the Bard inhabited (or intended), have become far more common than traditional ones. With all of the updates floating around out there, you could be forgiven for dismissing Theatre Memphis's production of "Much Ado About Nothing" -- set in 1960s America -- as yet another gimmicky take on a very old play. But don't let the concept scare you off. Sure, the 60s are ladled on pretty thickly here, from the clothing choices to the music to some of the comedy bits (such as a Maxwell Smart-inspired Dogberry). And sure, the play offers up a few parallels to the time period, but not so many as to make this update a profound revelation. Still, the cast and crew of this high-energy production (first performed at Bartlett Community Theatre last year) are so comfortable and skilled with the material -- and the material itself is trimmed down so judiciously -- that the show stands as a rare example of some truly delightful Shakespeare. The real strength of the production lies not in the concept, but in the unbuttoned, unfussy approach to the language. It's a skilled team that can make rapidly paced Shakespeare not only simple to follow, but also fresh, fun, and funny as hell. Collapse

      JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT is an amazingly good show at Theatre Memphis. The set works well for the many actors. It lends just the right ambiance and allows the cast ample room to dance and sings. Barry Fuller is a super Jacob who is the father of all those boys. He provides his usual stellar performance. Kathy Caradine’s choreography is fast paced, athletic and overall great fun. It keeps everyone on their toes. André Bruce Ward’s costumes are priceless and especially the Pharoah-ettes’ gold leaf outfits, blue hair and aqua tennis shoes!! This is not the traditional biblical story. Jonathan Christian’s Pharoah almost steals the show. His hip swiveling, scarf tossing action is not to be missed. The audience loved it. The children’s choir was excellent and most entertaining. One child in particular, Hazel Violet Greene, never missed a beat. I think she is ready for Broadway! All in all, this is a splendid way to spend an evening and the whold family would enjoy this show. Collapse

      The Memphis production of La Cage aux Folles is stunning. It is a flawless and spectacular stage event. The scenic design of Christopher McCollum is a real plus with the many changes that accommodate the action. André Bruce Ward and his staff have worked a costume miracle with the many outfits of the actors. One of Albin’s pink gowns is really over the top complete with fox tail hems!! The choreography and direction of the amazing Mitzi Hamilton is right on – a good balance of fast paced movement, high kicks and athletic agility – shades of Moulin Rouge!! Randall Hartzog is the perfect emcee Georges. Jonathan Christian is the ideal Albin – talented, emotional, flamboyant as well as irritable when challenged. Gary Beard and his orchestra are very apt in maintaining the proper balance and never overwhelming the singers. This is rollicking and hilarious theatre. Bravo to Debbie Litch, the play selection committee and the ambitious staff for undertaking this riotous musical. Collapse

      Time and again, Theatre Memphis has proven that they can handle hugely ambitious shows on a very large scale. So it's to the organization's credit that their Next Stage continues to focus on intimate, offbeat productions, which are typically delivered with the same quality and attention to detail as a mainstage show. This production of A.R. Gurney's "Buffalo Gal" is no exception. Performed in an uninterrupted 90 minutes, "Buffalo Gal" follows Amanda, a fading film star, as she tries to return to her roots by taking to the stage in her hometown of Buffalo, NY. Despite the pampering of the theater's artistic crew, the insecure Amanda finds herself pulled by a web of conflicting forces, including a former lover, her unhappy agent, her grandmother's crumbling estate, the authenticity of the theater, and the lure of fame. The all-star cast is uniformly excellent here, led by Christina Wellford Scott as a mercurial, richly imagined, utterly believable Amanda. Director Jerry Chipman is on sure footing throughout the play, which comes across like a backstage scene that the audience just happens to overhear. Funny, poignant, clever, and complex in all the right amounts, "Buffalo Gal" is a show that might be easy to miss while you're waiting for the next mainstage hit. Make sure that doesn't happen.
