      Hairspray at Playhouse is set in Baltimore, but the show is endearingly Memphis. Take your comfy seat in the beautiful new venue and come with me to those thrilling days of yesteryear. The names have been changed to protect the guilty, but every Memphian of a certain age is sure to identify thinly disguised allusions to Memphis institutions like “Tuesday is Colored Day at The Zoo,” George Klein’s “Dance Party,” Downtown’s Black and White Store, and Poplar Tunes Record Shop. Baltimore or Memphis, this feel-good musical is all Broadway! Other theatres have installed hearing aids at their seats… POTS may one-up-‘em and install seat belts! The audience can’t help but want to get up and dance in the aisles! And that’s just what happens during the finale when multi- colored balloons drop from the ceiling and the theatre becomes awash in a crescendo of rocking music, bold color, and happy patrons standing and cheering the exceptional cast of what must be one of the very best performances ever presented at Playhouse. Caveat: If you come to the theatre to see performances by Memphis’ perennial favorite actress Courtney Oliver or the return of Ken Zimmerman you may be tempted after the final curtain call to take your ticket stub to the box office and ask for a refund. Courtney and Ken are so cleverly costumed, always in character, and deliver such over-the-top performances you may fail to recognize either of them as they become Tracy and Edna Turnblad. Speaking of tickets, get yours now. Hairspray is sure to have a brilliant run in Memphis. It’s a Cinderella story about a nice girl with an unconventional body shape winning her handsome prince, and of a more hopeful society for Baltimore/Memphis's black community. Truth to tell no way would Tracy Turnblad's feet fit into a petite Cinderella’s delicate glass slippers, but the nimble Courtney, herself an accomplished choreographer, can dance any Cinderella off the stage. You will be impressed by the sheer professionalism of the production: beautifully choreographed with energetic dance scenes by guest choreographer Shorey Walker and bright, lively, sets ingeniously created by imported scenic designer Jimmie Humphries. Rebecca Powell’s colorful and eye-popping costumes rock and rule, as do the seemingly sprayed and lacquered big hair-do’s of the day which seem to defy gravity. The music is homage to the Top 40 of the 1950s with brilliant toe-tapping beats and sing-along melodies. More about the stars of the show: I was blown away as always by Courtney Oliver’s performance. Courtney’s sparkling personality is so engaging, the audience loves her from the very first scene. At no point do we feel this sweet smiley girl is anything but totally sincere. Ken Zimmerman shines as Edna, Tracy's mother (the Travolta movie role). Matt Reed is rather more contained as Wilbur, but their big song and dance duet, "Timeless to Me," gets a huge and enthusiastic hand. The always winning Laura Stracko as Penny Pingleton delivers her usual superb performance. She makes the transition from gifted comedienne/geeky girl to striking beauty after hooking up with Seaweed - played by the very talented Karlos Nichols, whose solo "Run and Tell That" is also a show stopper. Jackie Murray exhibits her powerful voice and delivers a stunningly strong performance as Momma Motormouth Maybelle. Jordan Nichols (whose talent comes naturally as the real life son of Playhouse executive producer Jackie Nichols) excels as the teen idol Link Larkin . The Motown retro Dynamites are superlative as their musical number welcomes the advent of the 1960s. In the subplot we find Tracy’s character as catalyst for social change; smarting at the unfairness of the voting in the Miss Hairspray contest and the manipulation of a judicial system just to win a contest, and we cheer her determination to make the world a more fair and less racially segregated place.       Playhouse on the Square’s version of Oliver!—directed by Courtney Oliver (more about Ms. Oloiver later) —is a grand production that delivers infectious charm due largely to the boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm of its energetic cast. Playhouse’s new venue continues to impress. Oliver! utilizes every inch of the new and larger stage with its enhanced space for clever scenic design, and large than life dance numbers that would have been impossible absent the new place. Oliver! made its 1960 debut in London’s West End. Small wonder the show is still so popular. Consider its cavalcade of memorable tunes: “Food, Glorious Food,” “Where Is Love,” “Consider Yourself at Home,” “I’d Do Anything For You,” and, of course, “As Long As He Needs Me.” Nearly anyone will recognize these, and the rest of the musical numbers are equally impressive. The cast of some of the best vocalists assembled lately on a Memphis stage pulses with emotion and melodramatic passion. Props and scenery are interesting. London looks a bit more contemporary than Charles Dickens, the author book Oliver Twist, might recognize. But the closing scenes staged amid the smoke and fog surrounding London bridge are reminiscent of a “Perfect Night for a London Murder”…which is exactly what occurs. The costuming by Rebecca Y. Powell is really period authentic, adding a good bit of London atmosphere. Dance, Baby, Dance! The infectious choreography, also directed by thye multi-talented Ms. Oliver, is cleverly staged and infectious, as cast members cavort through acrobatics, Russian cartwheels, handspins, aerials, and other amazing moves. The singing by cast/chorus, especially the eager youngsters, is crisp, bright, and professional. The performers themselves bring this version of Oliver! to life on stage. They clearly love doing the show, are fully involved in their roles, and go all out to sell each song and ensemble. A great performance of Oliver! starts with a good Oliver. Eleven year old Ty Lenderman certainly fits the bill, playing a winsome, lovable, yet feisty little tyke. He may have missed a few notes but not many, and he projected his character with confidence. He also proved physically resilient – poor Oliver gets knocked about quite a lot in this show. But young Ty can take a healthy shot, hold his own, and bounce back for the next production number. Our young hero is surrounded by a batch of quirky, eccentric, and occasionally dangerous adults—i.e., classic Dickensian characters—who pull him in all directions, some of them not very promising. Chief among these misfits is substitute dad and pocket-picker-in-chief Fagin, played and sung with oily relish by Dave Landis. Fagin’s right-hand boy, the Artful Dodger (an equally artful Steven Andrew Parker) marshals Fagin’s phalanx of boys into a formidably organized army of clever thieves. More ominous, however, are those shadier types who flit in and out of the shadows. They’re more interested in what they can do to Oliver rather than what they can do for him. Oliver’s bad experiences begin with the odious Mr. Bumble, Profit comes first for Mr. B. The welfare of his orphan charges is a far-distant second in the pecking order. Bryan Robinson portrays Mr. Bumble with an imposing presence and magnificent, grand, voice as he presides over his villainous character. Poor Oliver is next forced to reside in a funeral parlor with the equally unpleasant Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry (David Ryan and perennial POTS uber-favorite Laura Stracko), another ill-bred couple benefiting from Dickens’ genius for picking names to match his sleazy characters. An even nastier fellow is brutal Bill Sykes (Rory Dale). We don’t meet him up close and personal until near the show’s end. But he personifies the London underworld and makes the show’s violent climax credible. Not everyone in Oliver! is a bad guy. Mr. Brownlow, genially portrayed by Parker Dinwiddie, is a decent fellow who ultimately does the right thing by Oliver. And Nancy (Hannah Dowdy) and Bet (Nicole Amanda Hale) attempt to do likewise. Adding to her own difficulties, the unfortunate Nancy has become Bill Sykes’ gal-pal. Her maternal affection for Oliver puts her on the path of no return. Vocally, Ms. Hale as Nancy shines with her renditions of the best songs in the show, especially her solo turn in “As Long As He Needs Me,”. The production is fortunate to have so fine a singer and strong actress as Ms. Hale’s Nancy. She is the perfect good bad girl, a tough moll with a heart of gold with just the right proportion of swagger and tenderness. She infuses her singing with a warmth, power, and conviction. And what a voice! Strong when it needs strength, tender when tenderness is called for, and all in all - - -my oh my how gifted! The orchestra sounded vibrant and real, I’d have sworn it was live, but I couldn’t see any musicians. For a recorded ensemble it seemed to produce a surprisingly full sound. I asked about it after the show and learned another secret of the new theatre. The orchestra is 100% live! No wonder it sounds so real. It is housed not in a typical orchestra pit, but underneath the stage itself, acoustically amazing. Oliver, the “Jill of All Trades” As mentioned earlier, Ms. Courtney Oliver directed and choreographed Oliver! She is such an unsung heroine of the Playhouse that this production of Oliver seems a fortuitous time to render kudos. Ms. Oliver came to Memphis and Playhouse from the University of Alabama where she earned her B.A. in theatre and English. Jackie Nichols, legendary Director of Playhouse, told me, “I am so proud of Courtney. She has grown up with Playhouse. She began nine years ago by doing marketing and she has grown into an indispensable prize here.” As an accomplished actress she has eagerly and distinctively played any role called for, both large and small, with equal enthusiasm and gusto… including personifying Peter Pan each Christmas season for four years. She has always eagerly done “whatever it takes” to make the shows and POTS the enviable success that it is, and that it might not be absent her very special dedication and absolutely unrelenting can-do attitude and style. Here’s what Playhouse Company Member Laura Stracko writes of Ms. Oliver in Oliver’s Playbill, “Thank you, Courtney, for your energy, inspiration, and ability to laugh.” Ditto, Courtney, from all the aficionados of Memphis theatre.       Frost/Nixon opened Thursday night at Playhouse on The Square. Outstanding performances were the reign of the night, particularly Bill Andrews’ portrayal of former president Richard Nixon and Michael Ingersoll who brought the role of David Frost to life. Mr. Andrews had the role down perfectly. He had Nixon’s voice, his mannerisms, his gait, his slouch, and especially his facial expressions. Nixon’s unforgettable face was brought back to life, too. Playhouse’s Director of Marketing Andrew Martin told me, “all of the actors do their own makeup for the show. Rebecca Powell, the costume designer consults and also makes decisions about hairstyles, but the makeup is left up to the individual actors, so there is no outside makeup.” Multi-talented actors, indeed! Mr. Ingeresoll makes David Frost an entertaining character, but Richard Nixon is the one who compels attention in Frost/Nixon. Frost/Nixon is intriguing because of the skillful ways it touches upon timeless themes of ambition, reputation, responsibility and politics in an era that was becoming increasingly dominated by the mass media. At an hour and a half without intermission, the play spends half its time depicting the intricate negotiations before the British talk-show host's widely seen 1977 TV interviews with the disgraced former president. Bill Andrews was able to play Nixon without falling into cartoonish caricature. He manages the portrayal more of an aging bull than a raging bull. Mr. Andrews takes command as Nixon. At Thursday's opening, he shared a standing ovation with Mr. Ingersoll and the supporting cast. It's a tricky role -- pun intended -- because Andrews is creating “Tricky Dick,” Nixon’s notorious nickname because of the Watergate scandal that forced his resignation three years before the play's events. Mr. Andrews finds humanity inside a complicated and oft-caricatured man. Projecting his intense physicality into the hunched and awkward personality of the stiff-necked Nixon, Andrews locates the soul beneath the many quirks and forced jovialities. He even manages to earn sympathy for the man so many in the audience had hated. Mr. Ingersoll portrays Frost with charm and humor, smoothly evoking the blithe superficiality of a kind of lightweight journalist who worked against all odds and setbacks to earn the greatest interview of his career. Bryan Robinson, narrating as crusading journalist James Reston, and S.A. Weakley as ABC editor Bob Zelnick, are among the American advisers who argue with Frost about what questions to ask, including the question that finally wrenches a long-awaited apology from Nixon's guilty heart. Memphis favorite Michael Detroit portrays the famed theatrical agent and impresario Swifty Lazar. Memphis theatre goers who have raved at Mr. Detroit’s previous Playhouse performances including John Adams in “1776,” “Jesus in “Godspell,” and so many others, aren’t likely to recognize him as “Swifty.” But anyone who remembers Swifty will recognize Mr. Detroit’s portrayal as among his usual outstanding. A large TV screen establishes the 1970’s setting and provides close-ups. The riveting final third of the show/interviews covers the point at which Nixon, who has thus far succeeded in transforming Frost’s interviews into self-promotion and sentimentality, finally begins to show cracks in his supremely controlled façade. In the end Frost leads him to admit his foibles for the first time and acknowledge his regret for his actions. Frost has brought Nixon a long way from the President who boasted, “If the president does it, it’s not illegal,” to the shadow of his former self, a nearly broken man. Collapse

      Sean Blake may not have been born yet when the great Ben Vereen won the Tony Award for Best Actor in the role of "The Leading Player" when the musical Pippin debuted on Broadway in the early '70's. But had he seen that show, itself winner of half a dozen Tonys, Mr. Blake might well have thought to himself, "When I grow up I wanna be just like Ben Vereen." Welcome to Memphis, Sean. You are Ben Vereen, with a few of the late Michael Jackson's animated dance moves enhancing the spectacular choreography originally conceived for Broadway by the legendary Bob Fosse. It's the story of Prince Pippin (Alvaro Francisco) who has just returned home having graduated with honors from an institution of higher education. And he has declared that he will do great things. He is determined to have a magnanimous life, to have his "corner of the sky". As soon as he can figure out exactly what it is he was meant to do. His first instinct is to become a warrior and fight battles of honor and courage alongside his father, like his stepbrother Lewis (Joshua Quinn) does. Pippin's Father, King Charles (Kent Fleshman) is not so keen on the idea of his smart son taking over the family business of "king-ing" and running wars, but he relents and allows Pippin to battle in the battle. Pippin finds has no taste for it. Pippin consoles his grandmother Berthe (played by Lili Thomas who leads and delights the audience in a "No Time At All" sing-a-long). Berthe's best advice to young Prince Pippin is to go for the love of a woman or, maybe lots of women, with all the gusto he can get. He does that, too, but it seems not to be "his thing." He tries murdering his father to become king and right the world's wrongs. Still, he finds that, too, is not what he really wants. Meanwhile our Leading Player stands ready if unable to shepherd the boy's life in the right direction, whatever that may be, introducing pyrotechnics, huge Fosse inspired dance numbers, magic tricks and a chorus of "players." Back to The Leading Player. The talented Mr. Blake cum Vereen cum Jackson is a tour de force as the master puppeteer of Pippin's amazing life. His presence commands the stage every time he steps out on it, in action, in energy, in song and in sheer presence. The consummate showman, he gives a show-stopping performance. Blake's Leading Player is complemented by Alvaro Francisco's near equally mesmerizing portrayal of Prince Pippin. What a voice! What a talent! He makes full use of Playhouse's new auditorium with its near-perfect acoustics (there was a little electronic buzz in the sound system, a problem probably easily cured). Francisco brings Pippin to life with his voice -sweet but not syrupy, charming without being cute. He is delightful, thoroughly appealing, and - as the role calls for - a completely engaging character. A few more observations: The new theatre has a real orchestra pit, and the eight-piece Playhouse orchestra led by Renee Kemper is a perfect fit. Real, live music for musical theatre on Union. Hooray! Ben Wheeler's lighting is understated but rich, colorful and simple. It matches the many moods of "Pippin." Finally, you won't know her but her name does appear in the program as a "player." She seemed to me to be "the leader of the pack." Lindsey Roberts distinguishes herself in the chorus. She's usually half a step ahead in dance and a half beat ahead in song.       I first saw Pippin as a college production in 1980. I helped out behind the scenes and got to know and love much of the music; however, I found the story very hard to follow. Thirty years later nothing has changed. Last night I enjoyed singing along with my favorite songs, "Magic to Do," "Corner of the Sky," "War is a Science," "Glory," and "No Time at All" but I was still bewildered by the incoherent plot. Pippin, which won five Tony awards when it opened on Broadway in 1972, is a surreal, circus-like musical about the coming of age of King Charlemagne's oldest son and heir to the throne. It is based on a fictitious book by Roger O. Hirson. Playhouse on the Square inaugurated its beautiful new theater on Jan. 29, with the opening of Pippin, directed by guest artist Scott Ferguson, whose bizarre approach emulated the vision of the show's original director Bob Fosse. The 1970s pop style music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked and Godspell). Pippin (Alvaro Francisco) is desperate to find something important to do with his life. He searches for fulfillment in all the wrong places'on the battlefield, in the arms of women, and in political power by fatally overthrowing his father, Charlemagne (Kent Fleshman) who, much to Pippin's dismay, has no time or patience for his son anyway. Pippin's mother, Fastrada (Lili Thomas), schemes against him to help her other son Lewis (Joshua Quinn) inherit the throne. After much personal struggle, Pippin finally discovers satisfaction in the simple life, falling in love with a wealthy widow estate owner, Catherine (Kim Baker), and her young son, Theo (Max Jessop). Francisco has a mellow, well controlled voice - the best in the cast - and portrays the naive Pippin with ease. The slightly eccentric but powerful Leading Player (Sean Blake), who "guides" Pippin along his path, alternates between providing comic relief and stage direction, manipulating each scene of the show hoping to elicit the outcome he desires. Full of personality, agility, a strong voice and nice hips, Blake was a natural for this role, which was created by the inimitable Ben Vereen on Broadway. During his search for his "Corner of the Sky," Pippin seeks the advice of his lighthearted and loose paternal grandmother, Berthe (Irene Crist), who tells him not to take life too seriously and live it up a little. Crist's one and only number, "No Time at All," was by far the highlight of the show for me, and apparently for the majority of the audience, judging by the amount of applause that followed her performance. The chorus members/players were very animated, like circus performers frolicking around the barebones set; talented performers all but I couldn't help but notice how many of the female players had unusually large thighs for dancers. Near the finale, the Leading Player tells Pippin "Nothing turns out the way you planned. Nothing is completely fulfilling." How apropos, I thought to myself. That's the way I felt about this play. While the performers did a commendable job and some of the music is very catchy, I would have picked a more reliable musical for such an important occasion. Staying in the same genre, Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar come to mind. Collapse

      It's not too late to treat your children (and yourself) to a magical, musical, theatrical experience at Playhouse on the Square where Narnia continues through December 22. This lively musical adaptation of C.S. Lewis' classic novel, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, is a fairy tale adventure that may be better understood after reading the novel. Narnia is an imaginary land trapped in an endless winter, inhabited by talking animals, and ruled by an evil queen or "White Witch" (Jennifer Henry) who is obsessed with winter and snow and wants to kill the children to prevent them from fulfilling the prophecy that she would be overthrown by two sons of Adam and daughters of Eve (or humans). Henry is wonderfully wicked as the White Witch in her all white wardrobe, pancake white face, perched on her white sleigh. It's almost hard to hate her, especially when she sings her jazzy "Hot and Bothered" number, my favorite of several great songs. She definitely shared the spotlight with her equally evil and eager servant, Dwarf (Karin Barile). It is up to the four children, assisted by the commanding but compassionate lion, Aslan (Bryan Robinson, who also plays Uncle Digory and Father Christmas), to defeat the White Witch and make it spring in Narnia.       This holiday season, Memphians, Playhouse on the Square and four British schoolchildren will return to a familiar wardrobe and magical land made famous by a beloved series of books and movies. But while Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmund will encounter the same witches, dwarves and fawns of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, they'll be doing so in a whole new Narnia. C.S. Lewis's classic follows the young siblings, evacuated from London during the Blitz of 1940 and staying in an old country house. While exploring one day, young Lucy finds the titular wardrobe and, in it, a path to Narnia - a wondrous and dangerous land of magical adventure. Before long all of the children make their way through to Narnia and are greeted warmly by the residents, but young Edmund is used by the evil White Witch in a plan to defeat Aslan; Narnia's wise and benevolent ruler. Before long, the children must all go to battle and each must choose a side. This new adaptation, by Jules Tasca, Thomas Tierney and Ted Drachman, is, as actor Jennifer Henry puts it, "epic." Henry, who plays the White Witch and serves as Assistant Director of Theatre for Youth, notes that the scope of the production is a great reason for audiences familiar with the story to see this new version. The music, she says, "ranges from tango to calliope to sheer rock ballad; there are swordfights, enough fog to delight (director) Dave Landis, and enough children in cute animal costumes to keep Kodak in business for the next few months." And yet, as epic as this take on the beloved story can be, there are plenty of intimate moments along the way. Bryan Robinson, who plays Aslan, notes one of his favorite moments as one of the quietest and most personal. "It's a simple song called, From the Inside Out," he says. "I enjoy both actors that play Edmund because they, oddly enough, remind me of myself at that age. I was a handful, and when I sing this song with them I always see a little me sitting there." With so many entertainment options this holiday season, Playhouse is hoping that this new Narnia will offer a complete package to discriminating audiences: spectacle, a classic story and a warm holiday message. "This show," concludes Robinson, "offers anyone who goes into it with an open heart, an amazing adventure of imagination." Collapse

      Don't go to Playhouse on The Square to watch Narnia. Go to Playhouse on The Square to watch the children in the audience watch Narnia. This production of the classic children's tale by C.S. Lewis is of the children, by the children, and for the children. Made into a hit film embraced by children of all ages, it's now been turned into a musical I had not seen the movie, but I'm told that this production lightens up most of the darker scenes with humor so it won't be quite as scary for younger audience members. I had the pleasure of being there for a matinee with a theatre full of school kids who were completely engrossed; they laughed spontaneously as if on cue and shouted encouragement to the cast and leaned forward in their seats so as not to miss any of the action. The production is under the direction of Dave Landis who makes the land of Narnia come alive on the stage. The set by Tim McMath is cleverly modified to fit several critical moments of the story. Lighting Designer Ben Wheeler paints the set with gorgeous lighting effects that turn it from winter to spring and from daytime to night to enhance the many moods of the tale. Amie Eoff's costumes transform the human cast - both young and old - into residents of Narnia, including the icy white of the White Witch and the patched-up apparel of the poor, cockney-talking Beavers ("Bickersons" who lead the adult cast members and keep the grown-ups in the audience roaring with laughter. More later). The cast includes the four English children who are all around the same ages they are in the novel. Playhouse uses a two-platoon cast system for its younger Thespians because the rigorous performance schedule is too taxing for a single group of youngsters. The flawless production I enjoyed featured the "Y Cast" ensemble of kids. I am reliably informed by Courtney Oliver, who choreographed the production and who is Playhouse's full-time Director of Auditions and Special Events, that both children's ensembles are remarkably and equally gifted, talented, and dedicated. The children's cast is joined by the colorful Narnian adults, ld by Daniel L. Martin and Laura Stracko who are a hoot of a couple as the aforementioned Mr. and Mrs. Beaver whose musical number "Wot A Bit a' Spring" is a delightful show-stopper. Jennifer Henry is the regally evil White Witch who uses her voice, forced smiles, and measured amounts of humor and coldness to get what she wants. Collapse
