Ballet Memphis

In its 25th season, Ballet Memphis serves as a creative resource to the nation as a maker and interpreter of the South's cultural legacy through its innovative neoclassical and contemporary repertoire, as well as production and training of the highest caliber. Founded by Dorothy Gunther Pugh in 1986, Ballet Memphis now employs 16 professional dancers with a $3.2 million operating budget and has performed around the world. The combined programs of Ballet Memphis' dance company, ballet school, educational enrichment and Pilates Centre, serve 75,000 people each year.

      Ballet Memphis' 23rd season is based around joy. Choreographer Steve McMahon has infused that theme into two original pieces that will play with The Wizard of Oz November 7th and 8th at the Orpheum. Being Here With Other People (set to Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D) came out of McMahon's desire to choreograph something without a narrative that allows the dancers and the audience to be aware of their natural capacity for joy. "There's a basic level of happiness that's always there for us, and I think it's our responsibility to keep that alive and to pass it along." Costume designer Bruce Bui visually highlights the theme of joy by dressing the dancers in wild pinks and reds. McMahon's second piece, The Lovely Story of Us, a pas de deux, explores the pure joy that can come with the beginning of a relationship. Then there's The Wizard of Oz. So what does Scottish-born choreographer McMahon have in common with the corn-fed Dorothy Gale from Kansas? Well - They both know what it's like to be in transition from childhood to adulthood; they've both had the desire to go to a better place beyond the rainbow or the Atlantic, and they both know what it's like to reach that better place and still possess the need to come back home. McMahon trained at the Ailey School in New York then established a life for himself in Memphis, but still calls Scotland his home. "It's where the bulk of my memories are; it's where dance started for me." But like Dorothy, he had to leave it in order to find out what it was he really wanted. He doesn't want to live in Scotland anymore, but still needs the rejuvenating beauty of it. "I don't think there's a way I can explain how beautiful Scotland is. I know where I was made. And there's something about that I can't put in words. But I'd like to try and put it in dance one day." Collapse

      If you have never seen one of Ballet Memphis' shows in an intimate setting such as this, you won't believe it until you do. They performed their season opener, Momentum, at the Cadre building and you could hear the dancers breathing and see how physical it all was. It was amazing. I'm not missing this one. Collapse
