    Elmwood Cemetery

If you want to learn about this history of Memphis, the place to begin is Elmwood Cemetery. Founded in 1852, Elmwood is an active cemetery and an outdoor museum. Thousands of Victorian-age monuments - angels, urns, and obelisks alike - adorn the grounds. Newcomers to Elmwood are often speechless by the beauty found in what has often been described as the city's "hidden jewel." Over 1,400 trees, many over a century old, shade the grounds. There are many ways to see Elmwood: with an audio tour, which can be taken from the comfort of your car; with a docent-led walking tour; at a Lunch & Lecture presentation, and much more. Youth education tours are available to school groups and are a perfect way to augment Tennessee State and City of Memphis history-based learning. The grounds of Elmwood are open every day of the year, so bring a camera and be prepared to be amazed by the most enchanting place in the City of Memphis.
