Stories like Lee’s show that your contribution to ArtsMemphis is so much more than just dollars and cents—it transforms lives, organizations and communities through the arts.
“Last year, I was working at the Levitt Shell, where I experienced a performance by Opera Memphis. Where I’m from, no one exposed me to opera, but I thought it was a great sound and performance. The main song that really caught my attention was 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' It was an experience that I will always cherish. They came again and I was in the front watching the show. Seeing the Opera Memphis pianists inspired me to take piano lessons at Southwest Community College. I’ve told my family about this and because they see the excitement in my face, they’ll come to the next Opera performance with me. If you’ve never been exposed to opera, you need to go.”
The Levitt Shell has become a place that connects Memphians. The venue presents 50 concerts each year – each one family-friendly offering diverse musical genres to those of all ages, cultures, and ethnicities. Annual attendance to the Levitt Shell exceeds 125,000. The Levitt Shell shares its stage and resources with Stax Music Academy, Opera Memphis, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, New Ballet Ensemble, IndieMemphis, Church Health Center, and others!
The performance that transformed Lee was a part of 30 Days of Opera, an initiative that has caused Opera America to name Opera Memphis one of the most innovative opera companies in the country—“extending its cultural service beyond the walls of the opera house to the entire community.”
