In his autobiography, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again), Warhol said, “Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best kind of art.” Typical of Warhol, the statement is funny, irreverent, and also an accurate description of his practice; he called his studio the Factory, after all. He was one of the most successful artists of the 20th century because he was hard working, prolific, and had an uncanny ability to identify subjects that resonated, and continue to resonate, with a mass audience. Marilyn Monroe, electric chairs, Mao, Campbell’s Soup cans, flowers, Jackie Kennedy, cows, Coca-Cola, and Liz Taylor – all vie for status as the defining iconic images of his age. This survey of 63 screen prints and five paintings includes examples of all of Warhol’s best-known works.

Colombian-born Fernando Botero (b. 1932) is a painter, sculptor, and draftsman renowned for extravagantly rounded figures that combine the polish and excess of Spanish colonial baroque art with the social realism of the Mexican muralists. Their humorous exaggeration belies the more serious content of Botero’s work—commentary on colonialism, political instability in Latin America, and the vernacular artistic traditions of the region, as well as European art history. The artist’s first American retrospective in over thirty years, The Baroque World of Fernando Botero is the most extensive study of his life and work to date. Drawn exclusively from Botero’s private collection, the 100 works featured—including previously unpublished paintings and drawings—represent the full scope of his oeuvre from a uniquely personal perspective. This exhibition is organized and circulated by Art Services International, Alexandria, Virginia.

This exhibition highlights complex and vibrant quilts, paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by contemporary African American artists. It explores through the American Folk Art Museum's rich holdings the range of artistic expressions by self-taught African American artists from the rural South and the urban North. Comprising approximately nine quilts and nearly thirty works of art in various media, "Ancestry and Innovation" includes paintings by and elder generation of creators, such as David Butler, Sam Doyle, Bessie Harvey, and Clementine Hunter; works by contemporary masters such as Thorton Dial Sr.; and provocative pieces by emerging artists such as Kevin Sampson and Willie LeRoy Elliot. Juxtaposed with richly patterned and graphically exciting quilts, the exhibition celebrates the ongoing contribution of black artists to the kaleidoscope of American cultural and visual experience.

This exhibition explores the wide range of work of the Barbizon artists including Théodore Rouseau, Jean-François Millet, Camille Corot, and Charles-François Daubigny, from forest scenes to stormy seascapes, from scenes of bright sunlight to atmospheric moonlight, and from moving pictures of peasant hardship to humorous depictions of leisurely boat trips. It focuses on the importance of place for the Barbizon artists both in terms of their outdoors paintings and their studio works inspired by the process of memory. The innovations made by the painters associated with the Barbizon school led to the development of Impressionism.

Recently discovered in the archives of the permanent art collection at Indiana State University, the holiday greeting cards were originally produced in 1935 as a demonstration set for publication by the Federal Arts Project. The FAP was an important part of the Works Projects Administration. The WPA attempted to get Americans back to work by hiring them for government-sponsored public projects. The original cards feature the works of such outstanding artists such as Rockwell Kent, Jose Orozco, Reginald Marsh, Diego Rivera and John Steuart Curry. A wide slice of American imagery is featured in this collection, and various traditional printmaking methods are highlighted. Never published, each card is signed in pencil by the artist, and carries the WPA stamp or watermark

All of the art displayed in the ArtsMemphis east office relates to Memphis. There are several pieces that are historic and play to the impact Memphis arts has had on the world.

Artists featured include:

Bill Eggleston – Mississippi Native Eggleston has been called the "father of color photography" - although he did not of course invent it - and since the 1990s he is widely regarded as the leading and most influential color photographer of the 20th century.

William Christenberry - Since the early 1960s, William Christenberry has plumbed the regional identity of the American South, focusing his attention on Hale County, Alabama, from which he hails. Although Christenberry is most often associated with and recognized as a pioneer in the field of American color photography, his vision is multifaceted and rendered through an unorthodox mix of media that includes sculpture, drawing, painting, and found-object assemblage

Nancy Burson - Since the inception of her career as an artist, Nancy Burson has been interested in the interaction of art and science. In the early 80s, it was Burson who introduced “ morphing”, a computer program that was able to create facial composites. Later her method came to be used by police departments to find missing children by “morphing” their faces to account for age change. The human face, its morphology, and its underlying genetic code are recurring themes in almost all of Burson’s works Baby Elvis (1989-90), Burson takes on Andy Warhol by morphing Elvis back in time to depict him as a premature iconic baby. The work plays off cultural obsessions and wonders, with some amusement, to what extent fame is embedded in physical appearance – DNA as destiny?

The contemporary art displayed represents art that is a direct result of ArtsMemphis support to the arts community. Artists featured include:

Paul Graham – The British photographer created a series of work called American Night that was influenced by his trip to Memphis. Paul Graham’s photographs touch upon the social fracture of America—the great divide—between included and excluded, blacks and whites, have and have-not. It is a simple topic, shunned these days or only dealt with in clichéd photo-journalism. American Night embraces this neglected territory in a series of shocking images that lodge firmly in our consciousness as they negotiate the boundaries of art and document.. The title, American Night, refers to a technique in film making where day footage is shot in nighttime. Graham’s work has been in museums around the world; including the Tate Gallery in London.

Matt Ducklo – Ducklo is a graduate of Yale’s famed photography masters program. Matt Ducklo is a photographer who captures a moment that is usually staged but in reality is an unusual element of an American institution: from the presentation of the news in TV studios to a new series of works that explore the “Touch Tour” - blind people touching works of art in museums. In these new works his subject is the blind experiencing sculpture by touch. Looking at somebody experiencing something with a different sensibility, the photographs contemplate people, “in the act of seeing.” He has photographs from touch tours at the Metropolitan Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC. The pieces in the ArtsMemphis office were captured at the Brooks and Dixon Museums as part of a commission from The Power House.

Special thanks to James Patterson, who generously loaned and curated these significant works of art .

Including rare textiles, fine regional furniture, evocative paintings, and early silver from Memphis makers, Around Tennessee showcases works made in the state and surrounding regions. In particular, the exhibition features several examples of Tennessee furniture, including the rare Wilson County Sugar Sideboard recently given to the Brooks by the Decorative Arts Trust. Likewise, it offers visitors a chance to see works from the Wolfe Bequest, which brought an extraordinary group of early Mississippi quilts into the collection. Around Tennessee also includes a selection of Carl Gutherz's immensely popular paintings as well as examples of Nonconnah pottery.

Exhibition sponsors: The State of Tennessee and the Tennessee Arts Commission The Memphis World, an African American newspaper published from 1931 to 1973, chronicled the complexity and variety of its readers' lives. The articles were illustrated with photographs by Ernest Withers, Mark Stansbury, Hooks Brothers Photography, and R. Earl Williams, among others. The subjects in this compelling exhibition range from a speech delivered by Thurgood Marshall in Memphis to women's organizations taking disadvantaged youth to the opera. Behind some of the seemingly ordinary images, however, is evidence of the courage, dignity, and ingenuity that citizens brought to bear on the living conditions in the Jim Crow South.

Gabor Peterdi (1915-2001) interprets each of John Ciardi's (1916-1986) fifteen poems in A Genesis: Fifteen Poems and Etchings--with etched lines and textural aquatint passages, where the inking and wiping of the plate are as integral as the etching process itself. The images "some more literal, others more abstract" reflect the artists' deep connection to nature as well as their response to the words of Ciardi's poems. The poet's A Genesis was completed in 1967 while Peterdi was a professor at Yale, at which point he was nationally recognized as a distinguished master-printmaker, training a new generation of artists. Drawing upon the experience he had acquired there, Peterdi set up graphic studios and taught printmaking at a number of institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Hunter College, and finally at Yale University. One critic noted that "man, nature and their inter-relationships" were themes that had dominated Peterdi's "creative energies" throughout much of his lifetime. This aspect of Peterdi's work makes it well-suited to the poems of A Genesis, wherein writer Ciardi reflects upon the universe as revealed in nature.

History blazes like the summer sun in this invigorating Tony Award-winning musical gem. The nation is ready to declare independence... if only the founding fathers can agree to do it. With the help of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Richard Henry Lee, John Adams conspires to turn the Congress from its usual "piddling" and "twiddling" towards the approval of the courageous document that will define the American Revolution. Leaping from the pages of history, witness the men behind the national icons - proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty, and ultimately noble figures determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.

Not Your Typical Yard Work !

Local Memphis artist Richard Fudge has an enormous backyard. It's nearly one acre but located in your average neighborhood. "Most days I feel blessed. Other days I have to mow all that," says Richard. A prominent feature is the grove of seven large pine trees. As the trees have matured, branches have reached and twisted for light. Finding the lines and forms of the pines to be elegant, Richard began painting a new series called Erin's Grove. So this summer when he's not out there behind a mower, he's been behind an easel. "This is the kind of yard work I could do every day."

Memphis College of Art celebrates Horn Island 24 August 25 - September 26, 2008, with an opening reception Saturday, September 6 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Main Gallery of Rust Hall.

The Horn Island workshop, inspired by painter Walter Anderson, brings MCA students, faculty, alumni and friends on a creative excursion to the small and uninhabited barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, ten miles off the coast of Pascagoula, MS. Since 1985, MCA's artists have braved the heat, humidity and mosquitoes in rugged and challenging living conditions and transformed their experiences into the artwork exhibited in the show. As in years past, friends of MCA contribute to the artist's creative journey. In exchange for financial support, sponsors receive artwork created by the student as a result of his or her trip. The Horn Island exhibition kicks off MCA's academic year and is one of the College's most popular and well-attended shows. Visitors view and may purchase the island inspired artwork while enjoying island hors d'oeuvres.

Richard Wright at One Hundred: Hattiloo Theatre, First Tennessee Foundation, National Civil Rights Museum, Rhodes College and Joysmith Gallery, all team up to celebrate renowned Black author Richard Wright.

Richard Wright at One-Hundred is a collaborative retrospective of the author, in which the First Tennessee Foundation has made it possible for Hattiloo Theatre to partner with the National Civil Rights Museum (NCRM), Joysmith Gallery, and Rhodes College, to commemorate the birth and accomplishments of one of America’s most celebrated writers. Dramatic performances by New York stage actor Charles Holt and Phil Darius Wallace, an art exhibit featuring the works of 20 artists from across the nation – curated by Joysmith Gallery, a reading circle for young children, and a lecture by Robert Bain – SAGE Fellow of Cornell University, will constitute this celebration. The use of inter-disciplinarian art forms will examine how Wright’s fictional works helped lay the groundwork for Black social movements and will also shed light on the historical importance of his non-fiction works.

Born near Natchez, Mississippi, on September 4, 1908 Richard Wright moved to Memphis at six years old. This relationship with Memphis and the fact that Wright was born one hundred years ago this year are the evident reasons for this retrospective. While it is expected that the city’s only Black theatre acknowledge this renowned native son, Hattiloo seeks to expound on Wright’s significance to the arts and social change.
