In Babar's Museum of Art, Laurent De Brunhoff features Babar and Celeste turning a beautiful old train station into a museum for their art collection, so that everyone in the kingdom of Celesteville can enjoy it. The works are clever elephantine interpretations of some of the greatest paintings in western art from the Renaissance to the 20th century. An elephantine Venus casts up memories of Botticelli while elephants enjoying a day in the park remind viewers of Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of la Grande Jatte. The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is proud to display over 35 works on paper, including preliminary sketches and de Brunhoff's original watercolors for the publication.

The epitome of romantic ballet, Giselle is a tale of innocence, love, betrayal, heartbreak and forgiveness. With the haunting score by Adolphe Adam and the ethereal choreography of the Mariinsky Ballet, this is one performance not to be missed!

This hip adaptation of a classic Russian tale is told by consummate storyteller David Gonzalez. Two outstanding musicians weave one of Prokofiev's classics with an original jazz-funk score, as David performs every role against a backdrop of stunning live video projections and moving images by Kandinsky. Filled with comic sparkle, The Frog Bride is a "ribbiting" coming-of-age story.

It's hard to tell who has the most fun at a Dan Zanes concert; the kids or the grown-ups who brought them there. Regardless of who's the bigger fan, a Dan Zanes concert is always filled with rootsy, whimsical songs brimming with warmth and wisdom.

Performing with Dan will be the Memphis group Watoto de' Afrika.

Wacky, irreverent, and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, Gilbert and Sullivan's classic score is suffused with a modern sensibility and rollicking good fun. Perfect for the whole family, this fresh adaptation features sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters, and an eccentric Major - General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty. The zany antics of these beloved characters guarantee a saucy, swashbuckling good time filled with rapier wit and lush, memorable music.

Vaudeville and Commedia dell'arte are seamlessly woven into an uproarious fable of scheming lovers, mistaken identities, and clownish greedy servants. Balancing on a delicately taut tightrope of mischief and revenge, the crafty servant Scapin promises to help two pairs of wide-eyed lovers while juggling an array of elaborate disguises to keep their wealthy fathers from discovering the truth. Remaining true to Moliere's classic farcical tale from the seventeenth century, this fresh and side-splitting adaptation adds a late twentieth century spin to the language and hilarious non-stop action.

Creator Ossie Davis claims the goal of Purlie is "intended to point a mocking finger at racial segregation and laugh it out of existence." This celebratory musical tells of the preacher Purlie Victorious Johnson, who has returned to the Southland to trick a local plantation owner into giving him the land he needs to build his church. Rousing, exuberant, and sassy tunes help speak to a desire to better oneself and surmount the obstacles presented by society that is intense, immediate, and contemporary. Filled with amazing songs, joyous laughter, and self-discovery.

Sharing and participating in various cultural experiences plays a critical role in creating a harmonious living environment and enhancing mutual understanding among ethnic groups. The upcoming 2008 Chinese New Year Festival is a program that addresses such an issue.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Memphis Chinese community is excited to share and celebrate Chinese values and traditions with Memphians. In each of the last four years, the Festival has attracted more than 2,000 people from the Shelby county, West Memphis, and Northern Mississippi region. The Festival will feature Chinese Art Exhibit, live music and dance performances. In addition to local performers, we have invited some Chinese professional artists from North America.

The coming Chinese New Year is the Year of Rat. In Chinese tradition, the Chinese New Year is a very special holiday for family reunions, thanksgiving, and well-wishing. It is the most significant celebration for Chinese people around the world.

We wish you peace and prosperity in the Year of Rat.

The long-standing partnership of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet is an infectious mix of folk/pop and family music that has garnered three Grammy nominations and numerous awards. Their acoustic-based musical comedy is a throwback to the days of vaudeville...A great evening for both parents and kids.

OTIS REDDING: FROM MACON TO MEMPHIS, an exhibit of soul legend Otis Redding's personal effects, goes on display Monday, December 10 at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Monday marks the 40th anniversary of Redding's death in a plane crash in Wisconsin.

FROM MACON TO MEMPHIS features photographs and mementoes from Redding's family and personal collection that are on display publicly for the first time.

In addition to the artifacts on loan from Otis' widow Zelma Redding and daughter Karla Redding-Andrews, the exhibit contains several items on loan from private collector Bob Grady and never-before-shown artifacts from the Stax Museum archives.

"Stax Records was like a second home for Otis," Zelma Redding said. "We are pleased to be able to share some of our personal family moments in this exhibit."

"Hugh Masakela has been, and will continue to be, an importance force in the world of music." (Amazon) Long before the term "world music" was coined, South African born trumpeter and flugelhornist Hugh Masekela was ingeniously fusing his own vibrant post-bop style with R&B, pop and African rhythms. In 1968, Masekela became an overnight sensation with his irresistible instrumental hit, Grazing in the Grass. With its breezy horn lines and catchy, percussive rhythms, the song topped the Billboard charts, earned a Grammy nomination and eventually sold four million copies worldwide. Opening act violinist, Tourie and Damien Escobar will perform an exciting blend of classical, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, entertaining for all audiences.

Teenage brothers, Tourie Escobar and Damien Escobar are a true phenomenon of our musical age. They combine the classical sound of the violin with Pop, R&B and Hip-hop. The result is a unique and uplifting fury of modern emotion and harmony… intensity and rhythm. Younger brother Damien says, “We play our violins so hard and with such force that we destroy a bow a show!”

NBS brilliantly molds unlikely genres with ease. From 50 Cent to Vivaldi, from DMX and R Kelly to Bach, NBS continues to enlighten and entertain audiences of all ages. From toddlers to teens and beyond… their music crosses and opens age barriers in a way that is unforgettable. Struggle from the Subway to the Charts is a brilliant blend of classical daring intertwined with rap undertones. NBS has created a new genre that’s being talked about and admired. The buzz has begun. Their music is a provocative and stirring Thunder that will be analyzed and copied for years to come.

After more than 22 live performances, and performing before combined audiences of more than 30,000, Umoja Kamaru makes a triumphant return for its ninth season of cultural reflection and jubilant celebration. Defined as “unity celebration” in the African language of Swahili, Umoja Kamaru uncovers a powerful message of unrelenting courage, faith and perseverance. This Broadway-like production takes audiences on a surreal, cultural journey from Africa to America. Having earned a reputation as the “ambassador of unity celebrations”, Umoja Kamaru has assembled a diverse group of audiences from all racial backgrounds. Synonymous with explosive beats and rhythms, this season’s Umoja Kamaru performances will include scores of original music, costumed dancers, breathtaking scenes and innovative stage and lighting treatments. In its embryonic stages, Umoja Kamaru consisted of only two dancers and two drummers. Now, this colossal production has developed into a cadre of more than 400 performers. A second generation performer from the Isaac Hayes Family, choreographer Howard PHeelgooD will return for his second season with the production. Mr. PHeelgooD has worked with celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, Janet Jackson and Mary J. Blige, to name a few. Many churches, businesses, schools, colleges, and civic organizations have traveled from as far as Nashville, Little Rock and parts of Mississippi to witness the Mid-South’s most celebrated cultural production.

Travel back in time for a day and explore the wonders of ancient Egypt during the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology’s Ancient Egyptian Family Day at the Art Museum of the University of Memphis on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Family Day is designed to introduce children to the art and culture of ancient Egypt. Kids can learn how to write their name in hieroglyphs, draw like an Egyptian, design an ancient Egyptian amulet, color a mask while learning about ancient Egyptian gods, take a special tour of the Egyptian exhibition at the Art Museum, and listen to stories from ancient Egypt.

The popular "School for Scribes" will be available again this year. In an intensive one-hour workshop, children and adults will learn about the ancient Egyptian language. A special session devoted to the rediscovery of ancient Egyptian language and the Rosetta Stone will also be available.

For more information visit www.memphis.edu/egypt. To sign up for the popular “School of Scribes” call 901-678-2649.

Giaocchino Rossini Cinderella (La Cenerentola) centers on a beautiful young girl, the antics of her evil step-family, and the prince who saves her. An Opera Memphis premiere, this operatic version replaces the wicked stepmother with a bumbling stepfather. Otherwise, audiences will recognize similarities between the opera and the version made familiar by Disney. Sung in Italian with English titles.

Saturday, June 28, 10:30 -11:30 am: Dog's Night by Merideth Hopper and Allan Curless--This hilarious fantasy encouages young ones to look a little deeper into a painting. The story is based on the dogs represented in paintings in the National Gallery of Art. After an all-night "doggie-party," the dogs try to return to their paintings, but their revelry has left them confused. What happens next will make you laugh and look very carefully at the paintings.

Roberto Clemente Walker (1934-1972) remains a legendary figure in sports, in philanthropy and in the hearts of millions of Puerto Ricans and Americans. With a cannon arm and lightning speed, he was an outstanding baseball player; nevertheless, the Puerto Rico native's legend reaches beyond the diamond. A new Smithsonian traveling exhibition honors this sports hero and dedicated humanitarian. Beyond Baseball was developed by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico with the Carimar Design and Research studio and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. It is complemented by a downloadable bilingual (English and Spanish) podcast (launching in November) and an interactive Web site, children's activities, lesson plans, biographical highlights and historic photographs. The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the Smithsonian Latino Center.
