Marking the first collaboration between director Pablo Almodóvar and leading man Antonio Banderas in more than 20 years, The Skin I Live In is a contemporary horror film based on Thierry Jonquet’s 1995 novel Mygale (Tarantula). Against a largely artistic backdrop (Titian paintings, Jean Paul Gaultier costumes), Banderas portrays a surgeon who, after losing his wife in a car crash, performs skin transplants on a captive victim. Throughflashbacks, Almodóvar reveals that the relationships between his characters are even darker than they initially seem, and themes of loneliness, sexual identity, betrayal, and jealousy roil to the surface.
