Part of the Film Series: Divine Words/Common Tongues
The latest installment in Daniel Kraus’ Work Series, Preacher focuses on the life and work of 72-year old Bishop William Nowell, a self-taught man of the cloth and feisty electric guitarist who presides over an African American congregation at Virginia’s New Covenant Pentecostal Church. Kraus’s cinema vérité filmmaking style puts Nowell in the forefront, capturing his routine of counseling, gathering food for the poor, and ministering to the community through the infectious sounds of gospel music. Admission: $6 mem/$8 non-mem/Free for VIP Film Pass holders. Call 901.544.6208 or visit brooksmuseum.org/films for more information or to purchase tickets.
Preacher is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Divine Words/Common Tongues: Reformation Era Bibles and Print, and as part of the Pearce Shakespeare Endowment’s 1611 Symposium marking the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. Events will be held at Rhodes College, the University of Memphis, and other area locations. For more information: http://www.rhodes.edu/1611.
