Part of the Film Series: Divine Words/Common Tongues
Based on a passage from the Book of Revelation, Bergman’s epic exploration of religious faith stars Max von Sydow as a medieval knight who gambles his life on a game of chess with Death. Much studied, imitated, even parodied, but never outdone, Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s search for meaning, The Seventh Seal was one of the benchmark foreign imports of America’s 1950s art-house heyday, pushing cinema’s boundaries and ushering in a new era of moviegoing. Admission: $6 mem/$8 non-mem/Free for VIP Film Pass holders. Call 901.544.6208 or visit brooksmuseum.org/films for more information or to purchase tickets.
The Seventh Seal is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Divine Words/Common Tongues: Reformation Era Bibles and Print, and as part of the Pearce Shakespeare Endowment’s 1611 Symposium marking the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. Events will be held at Rhodes College, the University of Memphis, and other area locations. For more information: http://www.rhodes.edu/1611.
