    The most successful opera of its time, and a favorite of the Victorian era, Gounod’s masterpiece charts the downfall of Faust, the philosopher tempted by the demon Méphistophélès, and the terrible consequences of his tainted love of the innocent Marguerite and her brother Valentin.
