Memphis Brooks Museum of Art

Widely considered the inaugural release in what would become the French new wave, this film is a bitter account of rural life, seen through the eyes of François (Jean-Claude Brialy), who returns to his home village after being gone for more than a decade. Admission: $6 mem/$8 non-mem/Free for VIP Film Pass holders. Call 901.544.6208 or visit brooksmuseum.org/films for more information or to purchase tickets.
Le Beau Serge is part of the Brooks’ New Wave Revolution Film Series, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Monet to Cézanne/Cassatt to Sargent: The Impressionist Revolution. Like their Impressionist counterparts a century earlier, young French filmmakers turned the art world upside down with their rejection of classical cinematic form. Film connoisseurs James Vest, Shira Malkin, Laura Loth, and Robert Gordon guide viewers through screenings of works by Godard, Truffaut, Varda and Chabrol. Sponsored by Rhodes College and co-presented by Indie Memphis.
Director: Claude Chabrol
