    SMS, released in 1968, was a series of publications conceived by William Nelson Copley that brought together a range of twentieth-century artists, from Roy Lichtenstein and H.C. Westermann to Meret Oppenheim and May Ray. The six portfolios contained an array of writings and art works that subscribers were to receive via the mail for the grand sum of $100, thereby bypassing museums and galleries traditionally the most common venues for encountering contemporary art. Regardless of stature, all of the artists were paid $100 for their contributions. The results—fascinating, inventive, and eclectic—are a microcosm of an anarchic time.
