This exhibition is located in Special Exhibitions gallery 2This exhibition explores the importance of illustrations, treatises, and block books immediately before and during the Protestant Reformation. Many of these works reflect the feeling of turmoil, dissatisfaction, and change common in Europe during the late 1400s. Some northern artists, including Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) and Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-1561), focused their attention upon visionary images of the Apocalypse or Christ’s sufferings. Only a few years later the courageous and radical monk Martin Luther (1483-1546) nailed his “Ninety-five Theses” to the door of a church in Wittenburg, Germany. This document—which protested financial abuses within Roman Catholicism—sparked the revolt of thousands of Christians and the establishment of the Protestant faiths. In addition, Luther’s translation of the Bible from Latin into German made it immediately accessible to the general public of his country. It also inspired dozens of native language versions across Europe, including the King James Bible of 1611.
