Set in Rome in 1800, the opera includes some of Puccini’s best-loved arias and has inspired legendary performances from many of opera’s leading singers, including Luciano Pavarotti and Maria Callas.

The Opera Memphis production marks the American debut of Scottish soprano and opera sensation Lee Bisset as Tosca. Bisset received rave reviews for her performance as Sieglinde in the Longborough Festival production of DIE WALKURE and she represented Scotland at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2005. Tenor Gordon Gietz, one of the most in-demand young singers today, makes his Opera Memphis debut as Cavaradossi. Gietz sang the title role in the acclaimed production of THE NOSE at the Metropolitan Opera, and has numerous credits at La Scala, Santa Fe Opera, L'Opera Comique, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Returning to Opera Memphis are baritone Louis Otey, conductor Willie Waters and stage director Matthew Lata. Otey reprises the role of Scarpia after performing it at both New York City Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. A graduate of The University of Memphis, Otey was last seen on the Opera Memphis stage in the title role of DON GIOVANNI. Willie Waters is a regular guest of opera companies in North America, Europe, and Africa, including notable appearances with the Australian Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, Vancouver Opera and Florida Grand Opera. Waters returns to Opera Memphis, having last conducted productions of DON GIOVANNI and RIGOLETTO. Matthew Lata, whose work in Opera Memphis’ 2009 production of FAUST received rave reviews, directs the production. Lata is one of America’s most respected stage directors, having directed more than one hundred productions with leading opera companies throughout North America, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Florida Grand Opera, Portland Opera and Wolf Trap Opera.

Painter Cavaradossi helps political prisoner Angelotti hide from Baron Scarpia’s secret police. Scarpia lusts after Cavaradossi’s lover, opera singer Floria Tosca. Cavaradossi is arrested and tortured by Scarpia’s men for aiding a fugitive. Tosca promises herself to Scarpia on the condition that he allow Cavaradossi to leave the country with her. Scarpia agrees, sealing his fate, and that of the lovers. Italian with English titles.
