Emerging artists from Memphis’ Midtown North Community will present the play “Hollywood Dreams” on Friday, July 29. Free and open to the public, the production begins at 6 p.m. in Rhodes College’s McCoy Theatre.
A combination of theatre, dance, and music, “Hollywood Dreams” tells the story of overcoming challenges to reach dreams. The content of the play has come directly from the cast from the Midtown North Community whose ages range from 6 to 18. The project has been facilitated by fellows of Rhodes’ Institute for Regional Studies.
“We’re really committed to it being a production the emerging artists have created and they take ownership of,” says David Jilg, Professor of Theatre at Rhodes. Liz Daggett, Director of Rhodes’ Center for Outreach in the Development of the Arts is working with Rhodes fellows on making a documentary about the project. “I think everyone will be wowed by the talent and professionalism of the emerging artists,” Daggett says.
The project has been a collaboration of many including the Center for Outreach in the Development of the Arts, the Hollywood Community Center, the Riea and Steve Lainoff Fellowship Program, the McCoy Theatre, Plough Community Development Grant, Rhodes’ Fellowship Program, Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies, and the U Dig Dance Academy.
