Part of the The New Wave Revolution Film Series
François Truffaut’s semi-autobiographical 1959 masterpiece, one of the defining films of the New Wave, is described by Roger Ebert as “one of the most intensely touching stories ever made about a young adolescent.” The film documents a few months in the life of Antoine Doinel, a boy growing up in France during the early 1950s. Treated carelessly by his parents and overly disciplined by his teachers, Doinel begins skipping school, only to spend his days sneaking into the cinema and shoplifting petty items. His troubles begin to snowball, and eventually, Doinel is sent to a detention center where his future seems unclear.
Director: François Truffaut

The New Wave Revolution Film SeriesLike their Impressionist counterparts a century earlier, young French filmmakers turned the art world upside down with their rejection of classical cinematic form. From July through October, film connoisseurs James Vest, Shira Malkin, Laura Loth, and Robert Gordon will guide viewers through screenings of works by Godard, Truffaut, Varda and Chabrol. Co-presented by Indie Memphis.
