David Porter & Friends, Sinbad the Comedian Headline Free Festival in Soulsville to Celebrate Stax Music Academy’s 10th Anniversary Saturday, April 16, 2011 - Noon- 9p.m.

STAX TO THE MAX is free and open to the public. Admission to the Stax Museum is also free that day during museum hours, 10 a.m – 5 p.m.

McLemore Avenue will be closed to traffic between College and Neptune Streets, and the outdoor stage will also host performances by comedian Sinbad, Stax Music Academy ensembles, The Soulsville Charter School Philharmonic Orchestra, Rhodes College Jazz Band, and Memphis rockers the City Champs. The day will also include family activities with ArtsMemphis.

Started in 2000 at nearby Stafford Elementary School before it had its own building, the Stax Music Academy has touched thousands of young people’s lives in the 10-plus years it has been operating. To help celebrate, the Soulsville Foundation is pulling out all the stops for the April 16th outdoor festival, hoping to start an annual tradition that will bring people from all walks of life together in the neighborhood known as Soulsville, much like Stax Records did at the same site during its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s.
