Preserving and performing the choreography of African-American dance artists, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, DCDC for short, has achieved wide recognition for its ability to present contemporary dance of the highest caliber to the broadest possible audience.

The event is free and open to the public but tickets are required. For ticket information, call (901) 678-2350.

DCDC is the oldest modern dance company in Ohio and one of the largest companies of its kind between Chicago and New York. The Company’s performances seek to reach beyond borders uniting diverse audiences and providing a common ground for empathy, imagination, and the will to carry through."Highest Praise" is an inspiring and heartfelt work of art, accompanied by a live gospel choir from Memphis' New Olivet Baptist Church and the University of Memphis Gospel Singers, directed by Allen F. Todd, II, as well as U of M dancers. Also featured is choreographer Donald Byrd’s "J Lawrence Paint" (Harriet Tubman Remix) based on a series of Jacob Lawrence paintings. Earnestine Jenkins, U of M associate professor of art history, will give a free pre-performance lecture about the work of Jacob Lawrence at 7 p.m.

The events are made possible in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission, South Arts, National Endowment for the Arts and the U of M Student Event Allocation Committee.

I was able to sit in on the rehearsal for one of the student pieces on Monday, November 8th and I found it to be very engaging and soulful. I can't wait to see the show tonight!
