In this ferocious and funny drawing-room comedy, the wealthy middle-aged couple, Agnes and Tobias, has their complacency shattered when Harry and Edna, longtime friends appear at their doorstep. Claiming an encroaching, nameless "fear" has forced them from their own home, these neighbors bring a firestorm of doubt, recrimination and ultimately solace, upsetting the "delicate balance" of Agnes and Tobias' household.

      Theatre Memphis's production of "A Delicate Balance" certainly has impeccable credentials. Edward Albee's script won the 1967 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The cast is a veritable Who's Who of Memphis talent. And Bill Short's intricate, geometric set is a wonder to behold. So why is the end result so airless and unengaging? Most of the blame lies with Albee's standard over-educated, affluent, hard-drinking characters, who are abstracted beyond any comprehensible humanity. Albee loves to disrupt the lives of the idle rich; here the intruder is a nameless anxiety that overtakes two characters without warning (and departs just as mysteriously). Meanwhile, the members of the play's central family drink, brood, and bait one another mercilessly, all while riding emotional arcs that are practically inscrutable. Amid its flood of verbiage, the play has some interesting things to say about friendship and privilege, but Albee administers his themes like medicine. And perhaps the production also suffers from a problem of timing: Considering everything going on in today's world, the petty interpersonal disputes inside an upper-class suburban household can't help but feel somewhat irrelevant.
