“Then you must speak
Of one that loved not wisely but too well”

The aging army General Othello, a former slave whose North African ancestry was long ago vanquished, has fallen in love with a young Venetian woman closely guarded by her patrician father. They elope in the night, setting fire to a culture already charged with war, racism, jealousy, and political intrigue. Shakespeare’s towering tragedy and search for grace, stoked by the machinations of the famed villain Iago, unleashes the consequences of two huge hearts when kept from knowing how to love.

By the time they discover what you have already learned, will it be too late?

TSC returns Johnny Lee Davenport (Oberon in last season’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) to the title role that has won him critical, international acclaim. Also returning are Tony Molina (Bottom in last season’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Vanessa Morosco (Cassius in Julius Caesar).

      St. George’s Church in Germantown provides a unique and exciting space for the Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s enthusiastic staging of Othello. With actors running through the aisles, sitting in the pews, and encouraging responses from the crowd, this production has an Elizabethan feel to match the classic text. Though the audience is sometimes forced to turn around to see the action, the dialogue is heard clearly due to impressive amplification and mixing work. The acting is solid from top to bottom. While Johnny Lee Davenport’s powerful performance as Othello demands attention and praise, the cunning and sly lago played by Paul Bernardo is the highlight of the night. No matter what part of the city you live in, Othello is worth the trip. Collapse

      St. George’s Church in Germantown provides a unique and exciting space for the Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s enthusiastic staging of Othello.
