Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Musical. Annie Oakley is the best shot around, and she manages to support her little brother and sisters by selling the game she hunts. When she's discovered by Col. Buffalo Bill, he persuades this novel sharpshooter to join his Wild West Show. It only takes one glance for her to fall head over heels for dashing shooting ace Frank Butler, who headlines the show. She soon eclipses Butler as the main attraction which, while good for business, is bad for romance. The rousing, sure-fire finale hits the mark every time in a testament to the power of female ingenuity.

      Theatre Memphis opened its 2010-11 season with an uplifting presentation of the classic Irving Berlin musical Annie Get Your Gun. Under the direction of Jason Spitzer, the true story of sharpshooter Annie Oakley’s rise to fame and her romance with rival Frank Butler unfolds. Thanks to the musical direction of Gary Beard, the brilliant songs from this show keep you smiling, lip syncing and saying to yourself, “Oh yes, I forgot that one came from Annie Get Your Gun.” Oakley (Kirie Walz) is an illiterate backwoods hunter who sells her game to support herself and her orphaned siblings until she is discovered by Col. Buffalo Bill Cody, who hires her to join his Wild West Show. She develops an immediate crush on Buffalo Bill’s feature act, Frank Butler (Kent Fleshman), and he develops a liking to her too, which infuriates his eccentric assistant, Dolly Tate (Ashley Bugg Brown) who had her eyes on Butler but is clearly just desperate to get hitched—to anyone. The budding romance hits a brick wall when Oakley usurps Butler’s spotlight. Walz and Fleshman exude wonderful chemistry. Fleshman commands the stage with his deep rich and soothing voice and Walz seems to be “doin what comes naturally” as she modulates her sweet, soft voice from country to classical to fit the song. Walz is a drama teacher at her high school alma mater, Germantown High School, which is renowned for its theatre program. Bugg Brown is marvelous as the zany Dolly Tate. She gives the show a boost of energy and amusement whenever she’s on stage. The other players I really enjoyed watching were Joseph Lackie, Wild West Show producer Charlie Davenport; Shawn Brian Reed, Chief Sitting Bull, the mild mannered, sensible benefactor of the Show’s European tour who becomes an adoptive father “Papa Bull” to Annie (you don’t want to miss the moment when he gives Annie her Indian name); and Houston Newsome, Little Jake, one of Annie’s five adorable siblings. The costumes are cute (except the horrid evening gown Annie wears to Pawnee Bill’s ball). The set design is uninteresting but you’ll start to overlook it because the music is so mesmerizing and catchy. Three days later I can’t get “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” out of my head! There are so many famous favorites in this show, including “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “The Girl That I Marry,” “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun,” They Say It’s Wonderful,” and “Anything You Can Do.” Annie Get Your Gun is definitely a “pull…hit” in my book. You’ll leave the theatre feeling warm and fuzzy and singing all the way home (and then some). Collapse
