      This past Sunday, the Memphis Symphony held their annual Symphony in the Gardens concert at The Dixon Gallery. It was a beautiful, early fall evening, and perfect weather to sit outside with a blanket while listening to some wonderful music. Beyond the tranquility of the gardens, the atmosphere was filled with patrons, aficionados, curious first-timers and children running, playing and laughing. This combination made the night an instant hit, with the music being, as expected, fantastic. Continuing with the theme of “Journey of Discovery,” Mei-Ann Chen took the audience on an expedition through many continents, guiding the voyage with introductions and anecdotes about each piece. We heard a great variety of composers and were even invited to shout along with the orchestra during Moncayo’s Huapango. There were people, young and old, dancing during the waltz from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, and the audience was thoroughly impressed with the playing of Strauss’ overture to Die Fledermaus. Only the occasional FedEx plane or locomotive disturbed the otherwise still beauty of nature and music. Mei-Ann praised the orchestra multiple times for its dedication to quality and reiterated her commitment to molding them into one of the premier arts attractions of the region. Well, I believe they are well on their way; this orchestra’s sea change has shown how the MSO is thriving for excellence with each new wave. Collapse
