An aspiring teen journalist, an awkward wannabe popstar, and the openly gay new kid in town all have secrets. But when their squeaky clean small-town high school refuses to acknowledge the messy parts of being a teenager, this ragtag bunch of misfits starts an after school Speech and Debate team to expose a possible scandal – and sparks more debate than their high school ever bargained for. “Bristling with vitality, wicked humor, terrific dialogue and a direct pipeline into the zeitgeist of contemporary youth.” – Variety

      Speech & Debate, a play written by Stephen Karam and dubbed by Entertainment Weekly as one of the best new plays of 2006, opened Friday at TheatreWorks as part of the POTS at the Works series. You could say that it is a play about three high school misfits who are searching for ways to make their lives more meaningful, more accepted and to establish a certain justice for the underdogs of the world. The teacher/advisor they have contact with in the play is not open to listening. She had rather the provocative topics just go way. Deemed as odd by their peers, they are pretty much loners until they find one another. Diwata, Howie and Solomon are brought together through internet involvement and a potential school scandal that touches each of their lives. Reluctant and somewhat suspicious of one another, they continually test the waters of trust and understanding hoping to find common ground. Directed by Dave Landis, the three teenagers find those elements in their roles that show vulnerability, strength, pathos and humor. Diwata, the determined drama queen leading the fight for recognition, is played with intense purpose and humor by Playhouse intern Jenny Lynn Christoffersen , Howie, the new comer to the school who is openly gay is played by Ian Goodwin. Goodwin finds the insecurities masked by an outward belligerence that serves as his shield to the world. Solomon, who is wise beyond his years and hiding his secrets behind a blustering, outgoing façade is played by Sam Shankman who courageously allows the mask to crumble. Mary Buchignani is the sole adult who plays teacher and later reporter in the story. Mary fleshes out these sketches beautifully. Special Note: Rated PG13 Collapse
