      On Friday, October 29th, Mei-Ann Chenn led the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in a performance of music that was all, in one for or another, connected to the British Isles. You wouldn’t expect such names as Dvorak and Mendelssohn to be on the marquee, but they were joined by a set of pieces by Vaughn Williams to thrill the crowd and show off the talent of the orchestra and principals in another intimate setting at Buckman Performing Arts Center. The opening selection, Ralph Vaughn Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, was a brilliant selection. Conducting from memory, Mei-Ann was able to bring out the lyrical beauty of Vaughn Williams with her expressive technique. A lovely, warm brass section, a beautiful oboe solo and Mei-Ann’s musical sensitivity made the first selection a huge hit. After the first piece, as the stage was being set for the next selection, two members of the orchestra came out to give a little bit of their own connection to the United Kingdom. Frank Shaffer told about his lineage and Saundra D’Amato gave some background about the string quartet that was to be played. After the stage was ready, the principal string players took their places. As they performed the second and fourth movements of Dvorak’s twelfth string quartet, the audience was mesmerized by the collaboration of such beautiful melodies washing over them in this intimate setting. The second movement was full of lush melodies that would even give Tchaikovsky, melodist extraordinaire, a run for his money! After the string players left the stage, the orchestra joined Mei-Ann once again for the final piece of the evening, Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony 3, the Scottish Symphony. In true music educator fashion, Mei-Ann introduced each of the main themes, and a musical interpretation of them, before the orchestra performed the entire work. This provided the listeners with a partially painted canvas upon which the imagination could freely paint. The orchestra played with tenacious articulation and left the audience in eager anticipation for the next MSO concert. The Memphis Symphony Orchestra is on a roll this season, and if you haven’t been to a concert yet, you truly don’t know what you’re missing! Collapse
