Mei-Ann Chen has arrived! What an exciting night for the MSO. A program consisting of two of my favorite Russian composers went off without a hitch and left the audience wanting more. I couldn’t be more pleased with the inaugural concert of our new music director.
Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite was a wonderful choice for the opening piece. The downbeat immediately showed Mei-Ann’s impeccable technique and command of the score, which was conducted from memory. The playful melodies and ear-to-ear grins on the faces of the players immediately captured the audience and invited them to come on what Mei-Ann would later call “this wonderful journey.” Throughout all eight movements, the audience was shown the brilliant teamwork, superb intonation and captivating virtuosity of the orchestra and soloists. The movements were grouped as sets, and a different member of the orchestra would briefly introduce each. Besides sharing the spotlight, another beautiful display of teamwork was shown when Mei-Ann turned the page for the Concertmaster without missing a beat. The audience was beaming as the piece reached a rousing conclusion with the final notes of the finale ringing in the hall and hearts of the listeners.
Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, also conducted from memory, was a great transition from the playful and amusing Pulcinella. The introductions to each movement by Mei-Ann helped to prepare the audience and set the mood for this stunning piece. Each of the movements once again showed our new conductor’s ability to take the vast potential of our orchestra and make it breathe life into the atmosphere. The control of dynamics and balance between the sections demonstrated not only Mei-Ann’s trained ear, but also the ability of the orchestra to play with unforgettable sensitivity. The fermatas in the waltz were handled beautifully and the pianissimo ending of the Elégie had the audience holding its breath. The finale hadn’t ended for more then a moment before shouts of “Brava!” resounded in the hall.
Mei-Ann Chen has brought life to our orchestra that I haven’t seen for quite some time. Her love for educating and inspiring audiences is contagious. I heard on more than one occasion audience members whispering such things as, “She’s amazing,” and “I absolutely love her.” This concert made me even more anxious for Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto. Add in a joyous Shostakovich piece and it will truly tie the two consecutive weekends together. If this concert is a foretaste of things to come, then we are in store for a dynamic MSO season. Come on the journey, my friends!
