GPAC Presents an evening with the legendary Joan Baez on Tuesday, August 3 at 8 p.m. Baez has had a long and illustrious career in folk music, making her debut at the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959, touring with Bob Dylan, performing at Woodstock, and winning awards and recognitions too numerous to mention, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. A fierce champion of civil rights, a passion that is often reflected in her music, Baez has been called the conscience of a generation. She performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s March on Washington in 1963 and, more recently, at the Nelson Mandela 46664 concert in London. Her life was the subject of a PBS American Masters documentary in 2009, with the CD Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound, released in October 2009. Baez can be heard on Judy Collin's new CD, Paradise, and will be touring the U.S. during the summer of 2010.
