Beth Edwards is a painter and teacher living and working in Memphis.
Originally from Alabama, Beth spent much of her childhood in the mountains of North Carolina before moving to Pennsylvania, and eventually relocating to Memphis to teach painting at the University.
Beth's background is steeped in the arts. Haling from a family of artists, it only seems natural that she would become one herself, but, according to Beth, this wasn't exactly the case. It wasn't until she made a conscious decision to really embrace art - to dedicate a large portion of her life to it - that she really felt herself becoming one.
Trained as a still-life painter, Beth considers herself a realist painter with the "vantage point of a still-life painter." Her process is unique - working with various toys and dolls as her models to find the perfect imagery, color, and poses to convey her message. "I am fascinated by the way in which toys, particularly dolls, exemplify both the animate and inanimate spheres of existence," and it is this fascination that brings us her work.
Beth has shown at galleries all over the country. In Memphis, she is currently represented by the David Lusk Gallery, and in San Francisco she is represented by the Scott Richards Gallery. Her work is in many public and private collections, including Memphis' own Brooks Museum of Art. Her work has appeared on the cover of New American Paintings in 2001 and 2004 and she has been a fellow at the MacDowell And Yaddo artists colonies.
