    YO-YO MA Returns

    Presented by IRIS Orchestra at Cannon Center for the Performing Arts

    IRIS will kick off this six-concert season of celebration with a special Friday-evening concert, 7:30 p.m., at the Cannon Center, 255 North Main Street, Memphis Tenn., featuring the most renowned classical musician of our time, Yo-Yo Ma. Ma was the very first soloist to appear with IRIS, and his return on October 1, 2010, is a fitting anniversary gift to IRIS’s devoted Mid-South audience.

    Yo-Yo Ma has received numerous awards, including the Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the Glenn Gould Prize (1999), the National Medal of the Arts (2001), the Dan David Prize (2006), the Sonning Prize (2006), the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award (2008), and 16 Grammy® Awards. Appointed a CultureConnect Ambassador by the United States Department of State in 2002, Yo-Yo Ma has met with, trained and mentored thousands of students worldwide. In 2006, Secretary General Kofi Annan named him a U.N. Messenger of Peace and in 2007 Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon extended his appointment.
