Presenting FEARLESS MINE by Francesca Harper
From back wall of the theater, dancers emerge to protect one another, conquering their fears in this adreneline rush of a piece that leaves the audience wondering if they have taken even one breath during the first seven minutes of compelling movement.
Guest Choreographer, Francesca Harper blends original choreography, dance, music and film to create groundbreaking works that are category-defying. After performing with the Dance Theater of Harlem, she danced as a principal in William Forsythe’s Ballet Frankfurt from 1994-1999. Since returning to the States in 2000, Harper has performed in several Broadway productions including Fosse, The Producers, The Frogs, and The Color Purple. She played the role of Judith originated by Judith Jamison in a revival of Sophisticated Ladies. Harper has choreographed works for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Tanz Graz, and her own company, The Francesca Harper Project.

A celebration of the centenary of Samuel Barber (March 9, 1910 – January 23, 1981) - an American composer twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music - Students from the Advanced Division of New Ballet School shine in the Andante movement of the Violin Concerto, choreographed by Artistic Director, Katie Smythe.
Look for a new Flamenco work by Noelia Garcia Carmona, Chris Robert's Techno Ballet, Popplogia, set to Icelandic Pop . . . and Elements, an Afro- Ballet hybrid performance piece set to live drumming and flute and set by Bantaba Dance Group Artistic Director, Adrian New Ballet’s latest Hip Hop innovation, Maxx Reed’s Howl.
As always, New Ballet Professional Ensemble members take the stage alongside of the most polished students in the New Ballet School who train in a professional standard, regardless of the ability to pay.
 

Do not call Buckman Theater. Tickets are available at new Ballet Ensemble, 2157 York Avenue, online and by telephone, 726-9225. Box office hours are Monday through Thursday 11AM - 7PM and Saturdays 9AM-4PM. Special discounts available for groups and New Ballet students.

We really have exceptional talent in Memphis. Great choreography. It's like going to Baskin and Robbins you get to have a taste of all sorts of flavors of dance. Ballet, Hip Hop, Flamingo....etc!!       As I was walking to my car after attending New Ballet Ensemble's Spring Loaded, a boy around 6 years old was exclaiming to his mother, "It wasn't just ballet!" He continued excitedly describing the performances he saw all the way to the parking lot. I believe this kid knew what he was talking about. What makes NBE's show so amazing is that they present a beautiful classic ballet piece that exudes elegance and then follow it up with something a little more intense, rhythmic, and gritty. How many shows give you Samuel Barber and Florence + The Machine pieces back to back? All the performers and choreographers did a spectacular job, but there were a few that completely rocked it. The first piece I have to mention is "Howl" choreographed by Maxx Reed. The movement in this piece is fantastic and all I have to say about the performers is that they totally brought it. Another highlight of the evening was Noelia Garcia Carmona's "Mujer", a piece that demonstrates the intense, precise foot work of the flamenco genre. "Mujer" is nicely preceded by a jazzy fan dance that puts all the cool and smooth into it that one would expect as it is set to Miles Davis' "Concierto de Aranjuez". "Fearless Mine", a piece by guest choreographer Francesca Harper, has a tortured yet beautiful look to it that brought to mind elements of Madonna's "Human Nature" video. The African fusion dance "Elements" was able to seamlessly blend modern, ballet, and African influences into an exciting and dynamic piece that had the audience clapping along. This dance was made all the more memorable by the live drumming and fantastic lighting. Lastly, the concluding performance "Popplagio" was an absolute stand out. The performers displayed remarkable skill and Chris Roberts demonstrated his talent of choreographing a piece that feels fresh and contemporary. Overall, Spring Loaded provides the audience with more than "just ballet"; it allows us to see the wide range of artistic expression that is possible by borrowing from a myriad of dance traditions and musical styles.
