Giuseppe Verdi’s String Quartet; John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 2 for String Orchestra; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 Op. 95. Stern explains the underlying connection: all three symphonic works each had an initial incarnation as a string quartet. “In each case,” says Stern, “either the composer himself or a later conductor saw the larger symphonic potential of these chamber works. So in the new pieces, we get to explore the ideas of the string quartet on the larger canvas of the string orchestra.”
