Feature Artist: Chris Smither 03/09/2010 Location - New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana Feature Artist(s) - Chris Smither Like John Hammond and a handful of other musicians whose careers began in the 1960s blues revival, guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Smither can take pride in the fact that he's been there since the beginning. Except for a few years when he was away from performing in the 1970s, Smither has been a mainstay of the festival, coffee house and club circuits around the U.S., Canada and Europe since his performing career began in earnest in the coffeehouses in Boston in the spring of 1966. Smither is best known for his great songs, items like "Love You like a Man" and "I Feel the Same," both of which have been recorded by guitarist Bonnie Raitt. Raitt and Smither got started at about the same time in the coffeehouse scene around Boston, though Smither was born and raised in New Orleans, the son of university professors. Any of Smither's Flying Fish releases or his High Tone releases (including 1999's Drive You Home Again and 2000s Live As I'll Ever Be) are worthy of careful examination by guitarists and students of all schools of blues music. Beale Street Caravan is excited to have him on the program this week, live from the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Piano and saxophone player Big Al Dupree has been a mainstay on the Dallas music scene for over 60 years. At 73 he is still playing piano with a vitality that shows no signs of slowing down. He toured with T. Bone Walker and Pee Wee Crayton during the 1940's playing saxophone and has played in piano lounges and supper clubs around the Dallas area since the 1950's. Regarding his experience with T. Bone Walker he said "we all enjoyed playing with T. Bone because he was so versatile. He could play blues and then turn around and play some complex jazz progressions. A true professional on stage and a pleasure to play with." Guest Host, Poppy Tooker, tells us about Food and The Blues.
