Immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Helen, trapped in her secret world, is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. Following scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie's success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single word. "Interesting, absorbing and moving." -NY Post.

      “The Miracle Worker,” a play by William Gibson, focuses on the dramatic roots of the life-long relationship between Helen Keller, the blind and deaf child and her young dedicated teacher, Annie Sullivan. The Gibson play, set in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1887, began its dramatic life as a 1957, Playhouse 90 television production, telling of the struggles of Miss Sullivan, who grew up in an orphanage and was at one time blind from the effects of trachoma. She was hired at age 20 as governess to Helen Keller, who had become blind and deaf at age 2 after a debilitating illness. The play went to Broadway in 1959 and was a multiple Tony winning production starring Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke. Both actresses won Oscars for their performances in the 1962 film adaptation. “The Miracle Worker” is a touching, biographical story of strength, dedication and love. The Circuit production, directed by Heather Wilson, holds true to the classic telling and brings freshness with the depth of performance by Laura Stracko as Annie, Carly Nahon as Helen and a superb supporting cast. The role of Helen Keller is double cast and Erica Penninger will share performances with Carly during the run of the production. The technical production staff, Wes Calkin, Kathryn Springmann and Amanda Wiley, lend authenticity to the multi-leveled staging. The lovely costumes for this 1880’s production, were designed by Amie Eoff. Friday night was also the opening of the “New” Circuit Playhouse now located at 51 South Cooper, the former location of Playhouse on the Square. Audience seating has been converted into a more intimate space by removing several rows of seating and bringing the full audience closer to the stage. It certainly serves its first production well.
