Memphis Theological Seminary is pleased to announce Nikki Giovanni as the featured speaker of the Dr. Barbara A. Holmes Lectures in African American Studies in celebration of Black History Month. Giovanni, a native Tennessean, is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator. One of the most widely-read American poets, she prides herself on being an African American, a daughter, a mother, and English professor. Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality. Always insisting on presenting the truth as she sees it, she has maintained a prominent place as a strong voice of the African American community. Her focus is on the well-being of individuals and their community, specifically on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others. The evening will also include music by eight-time grammy nominee Kirk Whalum and world-renowned recording artist John Kilzer.

The Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church Chamber Choir will provide music starting at 6:30 p.m.
