Paul Oscher at the Pocono Blues Festival in Blakslee, Pennsylvania The Cate Brothers at B. B. King's in Memphis Dick Raichelson / The Real Beale Guitarist, singer, songwriter, pianist and harp player Paul Oscher has paid his dues, and then some. Those who have been following blues for a long time will remember Oscher from the late 1960s as the white kid who played harmonica in the Muddy Waters Band. As one who was there at the height of the late 1960s blues renaissance, Oscher's harmonica playing influenced lots of other players who came to prominence after him. His sessionography is extensive, including albums with Johnny Copeland, Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Luther Johnson and Johnny Young. We caught up with him at the 2009 Poconos Blues Festival in Blakslee, Pennsylvania. Also on the program this week, we've got The Cate Brothers, live at BB king's on Beale Street. Arkansas-based Earl and Ernie Cate were prolific songwriters and singers who blended the blues with elements of rock & roll, country and rockabilly. Pianist/vocalist Ernie and guitarist/vocalist Earl signed to Asylum Records in 1975; their self-titled debut, issued shortly after, included appearances by Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve Cropper, former Band drummer Levon Helm, and former Eagle and Poco member Timothy B. Schmidt. The band remains a popular touring act in Tennessee, Arkansas and other strongholds of country rock and blues around the South. A new album, Play by the Rules, was released in 2004. Guest Host, Dick Raichelson, tells us more about The Real Beale.
