What do you do when you're diagnosed with liver cancer, you need a liver transplant or you have eight months to live, and you're a musician without any health insurance? Friends of Portland legend Curtis Salgado such as Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal went to work and raised the necessary funds and low and behold he's cancer free and back on the road with his soulful brand of blues. Though the Blues grew out of African traditions, it's sometimes instructive to listen to how contemporary African music has evolved. BSC caught up with Oliver Mtukudsi, a young musician with a voice reminiscent of Otis Redding for this 2005 recording. strong ever since with productions by the likes of Dr. John and Steve Cropper. Her latest release is on the Telearc label. Eddie Turner was born in Cuba, raised in Chicago and became a man in Colorado. He's played with Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth, and Otis Taylor.
